“Unreal”: Oleksandr Usyk Leaves Fans Divided With “Perfect Set Up for Fury vs. Joshua” as He Vacates IBF Title

Oleksandr Usyk’s reign as the undisputed heavyweight champion was short-lived. Just five weeks after his crowning achievement, Usyk has vacated the IBF heavyweight title. This unexpected move comes as Tyson Fury invokes the rematch clause, setting the stage for a December 21, 2024, showdown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The IBF had mandated Usyk to face interim champion Daniel Dubois or relinquish the title. Dubois earned his shot by defeating mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic at the 5 vs 5 event in Riyadh. With Usyk now out of the equation, Anthony Joshua is set to face Dubois for the vacant IBF title on September 21 at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Bound by a two-fight deal with Fury, Usyk couldn’t defend his IBF belt in time due to contractual obligations. He had requested an exception from the IBF to keep the belt while granting Fury another shot at becoming undisputed, but the request was denied. Usyk took to Instagram to announce his decision to vacate the IBF title, wishing the best of luck to the contenders vying for the championship.

Usyk’s announcement on Instagram conveyed a sense of sportsmanship and a positive outlook. “Anthony and Daniel, listen – I know the IBF title is important to you. It is my present to you for September 21,” he stated.

Usyk retains the IBO, WBA, WBC, and WBO titles, ensuring that his rematch with Fury will be for the unified heavyweight championship, albeit not for the undisputed title.

Usyk’s triumph on May 18, when he defeated Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, was a historic moment. However, the IBF’s decision means Usyk’s undisputed status was fleeting. Despite this, Usyk appeared cheerful and unbothered in his announcement.

Joshua vs. Dubois: A Battle for Redemption

Anthony Joshua now has the opportunity to become a three-time heavyweight champion after losing his titles to Andy Ruiz and Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua has been in fine form since his comeback, winning three of his last four fights by knockout. Under the guidance of Tyson Fury’s former trainer, Ben Davison, Joshua appears sharper than ever.

In his recent bout against Francis Ngannou, Joshua delivered a stunning knockout in the second round, a feat even Fury couldn’t achieve. Conversely, Dubois, who last lost to Usyk, has since bounced back with knockout victories over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, positioning himself as a top contender for the heavyweight title.

“Anthony and Daniel, listen – I know the IBF title is important to you. It is my present to you for September 21″.

Title Relinquishment Sparks Excitement

Usyk’s decision to vacate the IBF title has revitalized the heavyweight division, creating opportunities for other elite boxers. Fans are buzzing with anticipation for potential matchups. One fan enthusiastically predicted that if Fury defeats Usyk and Joshua overcomes Dubois, a long-awaited all-British clash between Fury and Joshua could finally materialize.

Another fan expressed skepticism about Fury’s chances of becoming undisputed, suggesting that while he may not achieve it in his next fight, future bouts could offer him the opportunity.

The best part of this is Fury has zero chance of becoming undisputed.

Fans are also excited about Joshua’s potential to reclaim the title. One supporter expressed confidence that Joshua would become a three-time world champion after his fight with Dubois.

Oshey! My guy’s gonna be a 3-time world champion come September!!! 💪🏽 @anthonyjoshua

Speculation is rife about Usyk’s future. One fan humorously suggested that Usyk might vacate the title only to win it back later, showcasing his dominance in the division.

Some fans expressed frustration over the complexities of boxing’s multiple titles, making it difficult to determine the best fighter in each division. One fan called for a clearer system to identify the champions in the sport.

I swear to God, this is why mma fighters are more recognized. Never seen a combat sport where guys give up titles on the daily. Someone do something so that the mainstream knows who are the boxing champions in each weight class! Nobody knows who’s the best!

Usyk’s move has also earned him admiration from fans who appreciate his decision to relinquish the title and provide others with a chance.

Editor’s Perspective

Usyk’s decision to vacate the IBF title is a strategic move that has stirred the heavyweight division. His actions have set the stage for exciting matchups and have kept fans on the edge of their seats. This development underscores the dynamic nature of boxing, where opportunities can arise from unexpected decisions. Usyk’s sportsmanship and foresight in making this choice highlight his role as a true champion in the sport.
