Unseen Mike Tyson Training Reveals Brutal Wake-Up Call to Francis Ngannou: A Precursor to Joshua Defeat

As Francis Ngannou gears up for his eagerly awaited MMA comeback on October 19th against Renan Ferreira, a fresh wave of behind-the-scenes footage has surfaced, revealing a crucial chapter in his training journey. This unseen video showcases legendary boxer Mike Tyson’s intense preparation sessions with Ngannou, providing a raw glimpse into the mentorship that preceded his fight with Anthony Joshua.

A Harsh Reality Check

Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, has faced a tumultuous journey since his last MMA appearance in January 2022, where he defended his title against Ciryl Gane. Following that victory, Ngannou transitioned to boxing, stepping into the ring with Tyson Fury. Despite a valiant effort, he faced a narrow split-decision defeat, followed by a crushing knockout loss to Anthony Joshua in Riyadh.

The recent release of training footage, which Tyson shared on YouTube, offers a window into the rigorous and brutally honest training regimen that Tyson imposed on Ngannou. The video, released in two parts, not only highlights Tyson’s strategic approach but also underscores the high standards he set for Ngannou. Tyson’s candid remarks about the necessity of intelligence in becoming a heavyweight champion serve as a stark reminder of the sport’s demands.

Tyson’s training sessions focused on refining Ngannou’s technique and enhancing his power. Tyson’s advice to Ngannou, “You have to have brains to be the heavyweight champion. You just can’t win because you are big and strong,” reflects the harsh reality that raw strength alone is insufficient. This training aimed to transform Ngannou’s approach, making him more elusive and strategically astute in the ring.

From Boxing Ring to MMA Cage

Despite the setback against Joshua, Ngannou’s time with Tyson was not in vain. Tyson’s mentorship aimed to instill a strategic mindset in Ngannou, preparing him for the nuances of professional boxing. However, the transition from boxing to MMA involves a different set of challenges. Ngannou’s return to the MMA cage against Renan Ferreira is poised to test the efficacy of these lessons.

Ngannou’s coach, Eric Nicksick, has expressed both confidence and caution regarding the upcoming fight. Ferreira, known for his speed and knockout power, poses a significant threat. Nicksick acknowledges Ferreira’s prowess but remains optimistic about Ngannou’s potential. “This is a very dangerous opponent,” Nicksick stated, recognizing Ferreira’s impressive recent performances, including a swift knockout of Ryan Bader.

Mike Tyson said, “You have to have brains to be the heavyweight champion. You just can’t win because you are big and strong. [There are] levels to this stuff, man. The strongest guy doesn’t always win. This is a smart man’s sport, only the smartest win.”

Mike Tyson further added, “He’s been in the ring before. He knows the in and out about fighting. And it’s just that we had to transfer that because he’s using his legs and elbows and everything, grabbing. So we kind of… I don’t know… [Do] a new foundation and made him more elusive.”

The Path Ahead

Ngannou’s comeback fight represents a critical moment in his career. The lessons learned from Tyson’s intense training could be pivotal in overcoming Ferreira. Tyson’s focus on strategic intelligence and technique could offer Ngannou an edge, provided he can adapt these principles to the multifaceted demands of MMA.

The upcoming bout on October 19th is more than just a return to form for Ngannou; it’s a chance to prove his adaptability and resilience. The intensity of Tyson’s training and Ngannou’s demonstrated capability to perform under pressure will be tested in the octagon. This fight could be the turning point that defines Ngannou’s future in MMA and solidifies his evolution from a raw powerhouse to a strategically skilled competitor.

“This is a very dangerous opponent,” Nicksick stated.
