Terence Crawford Fires Back: Eddie Hearn’s Comments on Canelo Alvarez’s Name ‘Disrespectful’

In the high-octane world of boxing, where every word and move can spark a media frenzy, Terence Crawford has ignited a new firestorm. The reigning WBA champion has launched a scathing critique against British promoter Eddie Hearn, accusing him of using Canelo Alvarez’s name in a manipulative attempt to boost interest in Crawford’s upcoming bout against Israil Madrimov. Crawford’s ire has brought renewed attention to the complex web of promotions, rivalries, and negotiations that define the sport.

A Disrespectful Play

In a candid appearance on The PorterWay Podcast, Crawford, whose undefeated record stands at 41-0, didn’t hold back. He expressed his frustration over Hearn’s comments suggesting that Crawford’s fight with Madrimov had relied on the allure of a potential Alvarez match-up. According to Crawford, such insinuations are not just misleading but downright disrespectful.

“I thought it was disrespectful for Eddie Hearn to lie and say, ‘We had to use your name to promote the fight,’” Crawford asserted. “We didn’t use Canelo’s name to promote sh*t. He’s trying to stay friends with him, but it’s disrespectful to me.” This fiery rebuttal highlights the tensions simmering beneath the surface of boxing’s promotional landscape.

The Alvarez Factor

The boxing world had been abuzz with speculation about a potential showdown between Crawford and Alvarez, a match-up that many believed would be a blockbuster event. However, those hopes were dashed as Alvarez, preparing for his bout with Edgar Berlanga, seemed uninterested in a clash with Crawford. The Mexican champion’s demands and his casual dismissal of Crawford as “easy work” added fuel to the fire.

Crawford, never one to shy away from confrontation, took exception to Alvarez’s remarks. On the podcast, he addressed the disparity between Alvarez’s public statements and his financial demands. “I heard him say I’m easy work. If I was easy work, you’d take all that money that he’s [He Turki Alalshikh] offering you. But still he wants $200 million for Benavidez, and he wants $150 million to fight me. So that just lets me know right there I’m a threat.”

British promoter for being “disrespectful.” He said, “I thought it was disrespectful for Eddie Hearn to lie and say, ‘We had to use your name to promote the fight.’ We didn’t use Canelo’s name to promote sh*t. He’s trying to stay friends with him, but it’s disrespectful to me.”

He added, “So for him to say we had to use his name to sell the fight is disrespect.”However, the Mexican champion didn’t shy away from asking for closer to $150 million to make it happen. That’s not it. He had also labeled the fight “easy work” for him.

Legacy and Ambitions

Crawford’s comments reveal his perception of the Alvarez situation as more than just a promotional game. He believes that Alvarez’s reluctance and hefty financial expectations underscore his recognition of Crawford as a genuine threat to his legacy. With the Alvarez fight seemingly off the table, Crawford is now focusing on his goal to become undisputed in three weight classes, with his eyes set on other champions.

Meanwhile, Alvarez remains locked in his own high-stakes battle against Berlanga, scheduled for September 14. The outcome of that fight will undoubtedly impact the landscape of boxing’s elite, but Crawford’s response ensures that his own aspirations and grievances remain at the forefront of discussions.

Crawford declared, “I heard him say I’m easy work. If I was easy work, you’d take all that money that he [ He Turki Alalshikh] is offering you. But still he wants $200 million for Benavidez, and he wants $150 million to fight me. So that just lets me know right there I’m a threat.”

Looking Ahead

As the boxing world watches with bated breath, Crawford’s fiery response and the ongoing Alvarez-Berlanga bout set the stage for an electrifying end to the year. Crawford’s determination to be recognized for his skills rather than the promotional tactics of others underscores his commitment to the sport and his relentless drive to prove himself in the ring.
