Terence Crawford Blasts Canelo Alvarez: “I’m a Threat to His Legacy” Amidst $150 Million Demand Controversy
In a fierce exchange of words that has set the boxing world abuzz, Terence Crawford has launched a pointed critique at Canelo Alvarez, branding the Mexican superstar’s $150 million price tag for a potential fight as mere “excuses.” The confrontation comes at a time when Alvarez is preparing for his bout against Edgar Berlanga on September 14th in Las Vegas—a fight that is already stirring considerable debate and controversy.
Crawford vs. Alvarez: A Clash of Titans?
As Canelo gears up for his next fight, his name has been caught in a whirlwind of allegations and disputes. Recently, HE Turki Alalshikh, a prominent figure in the boxing world, proposed a blockbuster match between Canelo and Crawford. Alalshikh’s suggestion came during the Crawford vs. Madrimov telecast, and despite Canelo’s initial openness to the idea, he later seemed to retract, citing a lack of interest and substantial demands for the fight.
This shift in stance didn’t sit well with Crawford. In a candid interview on Shawn Porter’s The PorterWay Podcast, Crawford didn’t hold back. He dismissed Canelo’s lofty financial demands as “excuses,” adding, “If Canelo thought it was an easy fight, why not take the offer from His Excellency and make millions with minimal effort?” Crawford’s words reveal a deep-seated frustration, suggesting that Alvarez’s reluctance to engage with him stems from a fear of his own legacy being challenged.
“Canelo [has] been making his own catchweight for years, Canelo fought a smaller Mayweather. Canelo fought a smaller Amir Khan. Jermell Charlo,” he said countering Canelo’s argument.
“[He won’t make as much money with] Berlanga right now, that he will with me. But yet he [has] all these excuses,” Crawford further added, slamming Canelo for his many reasons for not taking the fight against him. ‘Bud’ argued that if it was an easy fight for Canelo, why wouldn’t he take the offer from His Excellency and make millions with little effort? He reiterated Canelo’s ask of “150 million to fight me”, which reaffirms his belief that he is a threat to Canelo, adding, “I’m a threat to his legacy.”
Canelo’s Price Tag Sparks Debate
The controversy heated up when Alvarez claimed that a fight with Crawford would not be worth the risk, citing that Crawford’s move up in weight classes would diminish the potential victory. Crawford countered this argument sharply. “Canelo has been fighting opponents from lower weight divisions for years,” he argued, pointing out past matches against smaller fighters like Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan. Crawford’s critique underscores a perceived double standard in Alvarez’s arguments and reinforces his own belief that he is indeed a significant threat to Alvarez’s esteemed legacy.

Crawford’s Motivation and Legacy
Crawford’s determination to prove himself as a formidable opponent for Alvarez is palpable. “I’m a threat to his legacy,” Crawford declared, challenging Alvarez’s claims of an easy fight. He emphasized that if Alvarez truly saw the bout as a straightforward win, there should be no hesitation in accepting the offer—regardless of the financial stakes.
The dispute is further fueled by comments from boxing trainer Bob Santos, who has expressed reservations about Crawford’s ability to transition successfully to 168 pounds. Santos suggested that while Crawford has earned his chance to fight Canelo, the move could prove too challenging, especially given his recent performance against Israil Madrimov. “He has earned the right to try it,” Santos noted, “but it might be a step too big for him.”
In an interview with Boxing Scene, Santos said, “I think it’ll be a step too big for him, but he has earned the right to try it… I could be wrong. He could prove us wrong. But for the most part, I think that’s just a lot to ask of Bud to go to 168.” Since Crawford’s fight against Madrimov wasn’t his best showing, Santos believes, “he would deserve the fight based on his career. Not just one performance.”
The Uncertain Road Ahead
As the boxing community watches with bated breath, the prospects of a showdown between Crawford and Alvarez remain uncertain. The ongoing back-and-forth between the two fighters and the involvement of key figures like HE Turki Alalshikh adds layers of complexity to the situation. Whether or not this high-stakes match will come to fruition is still up in the air, especially with the tensions between Alvarez and those who could facilitate such a bout.
In the Spotlight
Amid these developments, Crawford continues to spotlight the broader implications of this feud. His critique of Alvarez not only challenges the legitimacy of Canelo’s claims but also positions Crawford as a key figure in the ongoing discussions about legacy, financial stakes, and the future of boxing’s most anticipated matchups.
