Stephen A. Smith Calls for Ryan Garcia’s Ban Over Racial Slurs: “Time for Dissociation”

Stephen A. Smith, renowned sports commentator, has taken a firm stance against Ryan Garcia following the boxer’s use of racial slurs and offensive remarks towards Muslims during a recent livestream. Garcia, currently serving a one-year suspension for doping violations, faced immediate repercussions as the WBC banned him from competing for their titles, a decision strongly supported by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman.

Smith’s Demand for Action

In a passionate YouTube video posted hours ago, Smith expressed profound disappointment and called for severe consequences for Garcia. “Ryan Garcia… He should be suspended indefinitely. There should be a dissociation with him from the sport of boxing,” Smith declared. Known for his candid interviews with Garcia in the past, Smith was visibly upset by the boxer’s recent behavior.

“Ryan Garcia… He should be suspended indefinitely. There should be a dissociation with him from the sport of boxing”. Smith alleged that the things Garcia is doing and the kind of behavior people have seen from him are “not a byproduct of boxing”.

Instead, the sports TV presenter had other theories, who claimed, “It’s a byproduct of alcohol and d**gs”. Claiming he used to be fond of the young and promising boxer, Smith announced, “He definitely seems to have a screw loose and nobody is interested in being compassionate”. Recollecting the things Garcia said about George Floyd and being part of the KKK, Smith said, “He does not seem in his right mind; he seems out there and he has completely tarnished his career”.

Allegations of Substance Abuse

Smith went further, attributing Garcia’s actions to substance abuse. “It’s a byproduct of alcohol and drugs,” Smith asserted, suggesting deeper issues at play. Once a supporter of Garcia’s promising career, Smith now believes the boxer has tarnished his reputation irreparably. “He does not seem in his right mind; he seems out there and he has completely tarnished his career,” Smith lamented.

young boxer wrote, “I take all responsibility for my words. Sorry everyone that I offended”. He even added that he was misunderstood and has been struggling with substance abuse, for which he is “going to rehab”.

Garcia’s Apology and Fallout

Despite issuing an apology on social media, where he acknowledged responsibility for his words and disclosed his struggle with substance abuse, Garcia continues to face backlash. His own promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, condemned Garcia’s remarks unequivocally, stating, “There is no room for hate or intolerance at my company.”

Oscar wrote, “There is no room for hate or intolerance at my company. Period. I condemn Ryan’s words in the strongest terms possible”.

De La Hoya’s Response

Oscar De La Hoya, who had shown support for Garcia leading up to his recent bout with Devin Haney, expressed disappointment in a tweet following the controversy. While acknowledging Garcia’s apology as a step forward, De La Hoya emphasized that more was needed to regain trust and respect from fans and supporters.

The Road Ahead for Garcia

With his career at a crossroads, Garcia faces a pivotal moment. De La Hoya suggests that Garcia use this time away from boxing to focus on personal growth and rehabilitation. Whether Garcia can recover from this setback remains uncertain, but Smith’s call for decisive action reflects widespread sentiments within the boxing community.

Ryan Garcia’s fall from grace underscores the challenges athletes face in managing their public personas and the consequences of their actions. As he navigates this difficult period, Garcia must confront not only the fallout from his words but also the broader implications for his career and personal reputation.
