Shane Mosley Jr. Lauds Jake Paul’s Impact on Boxing Ahead of Mike Perry Clash

As Jake Paul prepares to step into the ring at the Amalie Arena in Tampa this Saturday, his influence on the boxing world is undeniable. The YouTuber turned professional boxer has stirred a whirlwind of opinions and reactions in the sport. Among those offering praise is Shane Mosley Jr., the son of boxing legend ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. Speaking on ‘The Rich Eisen Show,’ Mosley Jr. shared his insights on Paul’s impact and how the rising star has contributed to boxing’s growing popularity.

Paul’s Profound Impact on Boxing

Jake Paul’s journey from a social media sensation to a notable figure in boxing has been nothing short of meteoric. Since his debut in 2018, Paul has captured the public’s attention and drawn significant revenue to the sport. Mosley Jr., who has been in the ring himself and benefitted from the sport’s increasing visibility, expressed admiration for Paul’s work ethic and influence.

“I love it. I never look at a guy that’s getting attention and go, ‘Oh, I’m jealous,’” Mosley Jr. said. “I think, ‘How is he doing that? How can I do that?’ If he’s uplifting my sport, he’s obviously working very, very hard.” His sentiment underscores a broader appreciation for Paul’s role in boxing—a sport often criticized for its lack of mainstream appeal.

Mosley Jr. acknowledged Paul’s victories over notable UFC fighters like Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz as significant contributions to boxing. “He’s putting in the work and showing my sport a lot of love,” Mosley Jr. continued. “He’s given all those fights to boxing, where there could be MMA or whatever. So I love that he’s given shine to my sport. And so that only puts more money into my sport, which essentially puts more money for me.”

“I love it. I never look at a guy that’s getting attention and go, ‘Oh I’m jealous’. I go, for one, ‘How is he doing that? How can I do that?’ And also, if he’s uplifting my sport, he’s obviously working very, very hard.”

Mosley Jr. further acknowledged Paul’s ability to beat competent UFC fighters like Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz. He continued, “So he’s putting in the work and he’s showing my sport a lot of love because he’s given all those fights to boxing, where there could be MMA or whatever the case. So I love that he’s given shine to my sport. And so that only puts more money into my sport, which essentially puts more money for me.”

The Shifting Dynamics: Paul vs. Perry

Jake Paul’s initial plans to face boxing legend Mike Tyson on July 20th were derailed due to Tyson’s medical condition. Mike Perry, a competitor from the BKFC, has stepped in as Paul’s opponent. While this change in adversaries might have altered the event’s dynamics, it hasn’t lessened the buzz surrounding Paul’s continued rise in the sport.

Mosley Jr.’s comments also touched on the intriguing prospect of Paul facing Tyson. Despite the fight not coming to fruition, it sparked discussions about the age gap and the potential for such a matchup. “Man, he’d have to be pretty old,” Mosley Jr. said with a laugh when asked about the possibility of fighting Tyson. He elaborated on the logistics of such a fight, noting the difference in weight divisions and physical attributes.

“I know you’re not a heavyweight, but how old would Mike Tyson have to be for you to get in the ring with him?”

“I’m not a really, really big guy like Mike Tyson, so he’d have to be pretty old for that.”

Looking Forward: Mosley Jr.’s Own Ambitions

Mosley Jr., fresh off his victory over Daniel Jacobs, has solidified his position as a formidable middleweight contender. His recent win has further fueled his aspirations, including the possibility of facing high-profile opponents. While a fight with Tyson remains hypothetical, Mosley Jr.’s reflections on Paul’s impact reflect a broader acceptance of unconventional figures in the sport.

The elder Mosley, who previously trained Paul, has undoubtedly left a mark on Paul’s development. As the sport evolves and embraces new dynamics, figures like Paul are reshaping the landscape and bringing fresh energy to boxing.

Final Thoughts

Jake Paul’s journey is emblematic of the sport’s capacity for reinvention and growth. Whether you view him as a novelty or a genuine contender, his contributions to boxing are hard to ignore. Mosley Jr.’s praise underscores a larger shift in how traditional boxers perceive new influences in the sport.

As Paul prepares for his fight against Mike Perry, the boxing world watches closely. The event is more than just another match; it’s a testament to the evolving nature of boxing and the diverse personalities driving its future.
