1. The Settlement Breakdown

Ryan Garcia’s settlement with the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) marks a significant moment in boxing. After testing positive for the banned substance Ostarine, Garcia agreed to several penalties: forfeiting $1.1 million of his purse, paying a $10,000 fine, and serving a one-year suspension. Additionally, the outcome of his fight against Devin Haney has been changed to a no-contest.

2. Understanding Ostarine

Garcia’s positive tests for Ostarine, a substance used to enhance muscle mass, particularly during weight cutting, raised eyebrows. Ostarine, like other anabolic agents, is cycled to avoid detection. Garcia’s supporters argue that the detected amounts were minuscule, suggesting possible tampering. However, experts note that elite athletes often get caught by mistiming their cycles.

3. The Impact on Haney

The shift to a no-contest significantly affects Devin Haney’s career, restoring his undefeated record. Critics argue that the extra weight and muscle mass Garcia gained through Ostarine use played a crucial role in his performance. They point out that a boxer with increased muscle mass who hasn’t undergone weight cutting has a clear advantage over an opponent who has.

4. The Weight Bullying Debate

The argument that Garcia’s additional weight and muscle didn’t impact the fight is hard to swallow. Weight classes exist for a reason: to ensure fair competition. If PED use and weight advantages didn’t matter, the sport wouldn’t need weight classes. The integrity of boxing relies on maintaining these standards.

5. Historical Parallels: Margarito vs. Cotto

The Garcia-Haney situation recalls Antonio Margarito’s use of loaded gloves against Miguel Cotto. Fans who argue that Garcia’s PED use didn’t affect his performance are missing the point. Unfair advantages, whether through loaded gloves or PEDs, fundamentally alter the dynamics of a fight and its outcome.

6. The Absorption Advantage

Having extra muscle mass not only enhances a boxer’s power but also their ability to absorb punches. Haney, not known for his knockout power, faced a nearly indestructible opponent in Garcia. This imbalance meant Haney couldn’t effectively counter Garcia’s attacks, skewing the fight’s fairness.

7. Fan Reactions and Defenses

Surprisingly, Garcia’s claims of tampering have received little support. More baffling is the defense of his PED use and weight bullying by some fans. Garcia’s assertion that he unknowingly ingested Ostarine hasn’t held much sway, yet his fans continue to defend his actions, raising questions about the reliability of his narrative.

8. The State of Boxing Fandom

The Garcia scandal highlights troubling trends in boxing fandom. Today’s fans are quick to cry “robbery” after any loss by their favored fighters. They often engage in tearing down other fighters’ achievements to elevate their own heroes. This divisive and uninformed culture is detrimental to the sport.

9. The Ethics of Cheating

The heart of the matter is the ethical implications of cheating. If fans accept cheating as part of the sport, it undermines the entire premise of fair competition. Boxing, like all sports, relies on a level playing field. If one fighter cheats while the other follows the rules, it ceases to be a true contest.

10. The Future of Boxing Integrity

Garcia’s case serves as a wake-up call for boxing. The sport must enforce strict regulations and uphold ethical standards to preserve its integrity. Fans, too, need to prioritize fairness over blind loyalty to their favorite fighters. Only then can boxing maintain its credibility and respect.
