Roy Jones Jr. Provides Insight on Potential Tommy Fury Showdown Amidst Age Gap
Roy Jones Jr., the boxing legend, recently shed light on the possibility of a highly anticipated exhibition fight against Tommy Fury. In an interview with Boxing King Media, Jones addressed the buzz surrounding their potential showdown, acknowledging the skepticism due to their significant age difference.
Recalling their previous encounter in Saudi Arabia, where discussions about a face-off began, Jones reflected on the jesting reactions it received. However, he remained optimistic, questioning why age should be a barrier when fighters like Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, with a comparable age gap, are set to square off on July 20th.
“In Saudi when I met you recently we talked about, I got you and Tommy Fury to face off. People joked about it but that may seem a realistic proposition. Could that be back on?”
“I mean you got to think about it,” he said. “If Tommy Fury fought Jake Paul, Mike’s three years older than me. So if they can fight why can’t me and Tommy fight, if we wanted to, if Tommy wanted to fight.”
Jones emphasized that the decision now rests in Tommy Fury’s hands. Despite the age disparity, he hinted at the potential for an exhilarating matchup, drawing parallels to the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson bout. Yet, Jones expressed reservations about Fury’s inclination, speculating that the allure of a lucrative rematch with Paul might steer Fury in a different direction.
“But I don’t think they really interested. I think they just gonna move in another direction or they probably waiting for a rematch with Jake Paul, because he beat Jake before and Jake keep making his name bigger by doing things like he’s doing now. So that makes the payday bigger for Tommy.”
Indeed, Tommy Fury has hinted at his aspirations beyond a showdown with Jones. Amidst the fervor surrounding Jake Paul’s upcoming bout with Tyson, Fury has thrown his name into the mix for a comeback of his own. In a bold move, Fury has set his sights on none other than MMA sensation Conor McGregor, echoing McGregor’s foray into boxing against Floyd Mayweather in 2017.
“Yeah, definitely. I’m looking to get this out of the way, nice and recovered and I’ve seen, you know Jake Paul’s fighting Mike Tyson. I mean, why not, me and McGregor next? How’s that? I’ve got a comeback fight and I’d like him to for me return. So, McGregor, get in touch,” he stated.
This audacious call-out not only underscores Fury’s ambition but also highlights the crossover appeal that drives the spectacle of combat sports. Fans eagerly anticipate the outcome of potential matchups, speculating on the twists and turns that lie ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of professional boxing.
