Olympic Medalist Tony Jeffries Slams Ryan Garcia’s Training Attitude: “Would Have Gotten a Slap”
In a recent training video posted by rising boxing star Ryan Garcia, Olympic bronze medalist Tony Jeffries couldn’t help but express his disappointment with Garcia’s demeanor towards his trainer, Henry Garcia, who is also his father. The clip, which showcased Garcia practicing on the mitts with his father holding them, raised eyebrows for Jeffries, who found Garcia’s behavior unacceptable.
Garcia’s attempt at the famed Floyd Mayweather shoulder roll in a previous training session had already sparked debate within the boxing community, with his coach Derrick James appearing visibly disheartened. Now, with Garcia’s interaction with his father during mitt work, Jeffries felt compelled to speak out.
Taking to social media, Jeffries remarked, “‘Come on, get into the combo.’ If I spoke to my trainer like this, I would’ve got a slap haha.” His candid comment shed light on the importance of respect and discipline in the boxer-trainer relationship, emphasizing the need for a professional and respectful attitude in the gym.
The sentiment echoed by Jeffries resonated with fans, with many agreeing that such behavior wouldn’t be tolerated in their training environments either. One fan even joked that speaking similarly to their coaches would result in being “put in a bodybag,” highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
While Garcia’s training videos continue to attract attention, some fans expressed skepticism about the authenticity of his workouts, comparing them to skits for YouTube. Others remarked on Garcia’s choice of trainer, questioning why Derrick James wasn’t leading the sessions instead of Garcia’s father.
In light of Garcia’s recent controversies, including his public spat with the New York Athletic State Commission, fans speculated on his readiness for the upcoming fight against Devin Haney, with one suggesting he might be on the receiving end of Haney’s powerful right hook.
As a result, taking to X, Jeffries wrote, ““Come on get into the combo” If I spoke to my trainer like this, I would of got a slap haha.”
As the debate surrounding Garcia’s training methods intensifies, the boxing world watches with anticipation to see how he will perform in the ring come fight night.
In this context, after Jeffries retweeted Garcia’s post, a fan was in agreement with Tony. Likewise, they said, “Lad if i said that to any of my coaches id get put in a bodybag.”
On the other hand, a fan claimed Garcia’s workout videos looked like ‘KingRy’ was “doing a skit for YouTube.”
Meanwhile, one argued that Haney did “everything better” than Garcia.
