Oleksandr Usyk’s Heartfelt Dilemma: Continuing Against His Mother’s Wishes

Oleksandr Usyk, the Ukrainian boxing sensation, stands at the pinnacle of his career, having recently secured his place in history by defeating Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion on May 18, 2024. This monumental achievement makes him the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000 and adds another illustrious title to his previously earned cruiserweight honors. At 37, Usyk’s record remains flawless, and he’s considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of his generation. Yet, despite such an impeccable career and the adulation of fans worldwide, Usyk finds himself at a crossroads that pits his personal ambitions against his family’s wishes.

The Family’s Heartfelt Plea

In a recent interview with Boxing King Media, Usyk revealed a deeply personal struggle: his mother’s plea for him to retire. Her heartfelt message came after his historic victory over Fury, reflecting a common sentiment among fans who believe Usyk has accomplished everything there is to achieve in boxing. “My mama say enough,” Usyk shared, his voice tinged with both respect and resolve. Despite his mother’s wishes for him to step away from the sport, Usyk remains committed to his career. His mother, who does not speak English, expressed her concerns through a universal language of love and care.

In his poignant response, Usyk conveyed his devotion to boxing with a blend of affection and determination. “Listen, my mama not understand English, Mama I love you… um I going to continue boxing because I love boxing. I feel I have power,” he said. This heartfelt declaration underscores the emotional conflict between familial expectations and personal passion.

“My mama say enough,” informed Usyk.

“Listen my mama not understand uh English, Mama I love you..um I going to continue boxing because I love boxing. I feel I have power,” Usyk said assertively.

“My wife told me, ‘listen I know you you not stop boxing… never. You will go to competition uh training…but you not stop boxing’. I say yes I know, it’s my life.”

He further stated that his family and fans back in Ukraine keep him motivated to continue boxing. “Yes, of course. I am going to continue boxing. Maybe up to three more years. My motivation for fighting is discipline, family, and fans. I appreciate the support of the people and the Ukrainian soldiers,” he said.

The Support System and Future Plans

Even Usyk’s wife has come to accept that retirement is not on the horizon for him. “My wife told me, ‘listen I know you not stop boxing… never. You will go to competition uh training…but you not stop boxing’. I say yes I know, it’s my life.” This statement highlights a supportive family dynamic, albeit one that acknowledges Usyk’s unyielding drive.

Earlier this year, Usyk told Boxing Scene that he plans to continue his boxing career for up to three more years. His motivation is fueled by discipline, family, and the unwavering support of his fans and fellow Ukrainians. “Yes, of course. I am going to continue boxing. Maybe up to three more years. My motivation for fighting is discipline, family, and fans. I appreciate the support of the people and the Ukrainian soldiers,” Usyk said, emphasizing his dedication to both the sport and his homeland.

Rumors and Reflections

Speculation has swirled around Usyk’s future, with rumors suggesting he might retire after his rematch with Fury or transition to other combat sports such as MMA or bare-knuckle boxing (BKFC). However, Usyk’s recent statements suggest these possibilities are on hold for the foreseeable future. His focus remains on defending his title and proving his mettle in the ring.

In a recent interview with Sky News, Usyk addressed Fury’s provocative comments that their last fight felt like facing a “local amateur boxer.” Usyk responded with characteristic wit and a touch of sarcasm: “Oh my god, no way! Okay, no problem. The next fight will be easy.” Despite the jest, Usyk acknowledges the challenge ahead, recognizing Fury’s skill and intelligence as a boxer. “Tyson, don’t be afraid – I will not leave you alone,” he warned, signaling that their rematch in December will be fiercely contested.

Usyk finally responded to the ‘Gypsy King’ claiming in an interview in June that at times he felt like he was “in there with a local amateur boxer”.

“Oh my god, no way! Okay, no problem. The next fight will be easy,” the two-time undisputed champion said sarcastically in an exclusive interview with Sky News.

However, Usyk admitted that the rematch against Fury would be “hard” for him, calling him a boxer with “good IQ”. Nevertheless, he fired off a warning to Fury ahead of their clash in December this year. “Tyson, don’t be afraid – I will not leave you alone,” he remarked.

Looking Ahead: A Champion’s Resolve

As Usyk gears up for his December rematch with Fury, the stakes are high. His decision to continue boxing, despite personal and familial reservations, underscores his commitment to his craft and his desire to further cement his legacy. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Usyk’s emotional and physical preparations shape his performance. Will his unwavering resolve and familial support lead him to new heights, or will the challenges of maintaining peak performance against a formidable opponent like Fury test his limits?
