Muhammad Ali’s Daughters Take Stand: Aiming to Shield Athletes from the Tragic Fate of Their Father
Boxing fans may cheer as the final bell rings, but for the athletes and their families, the battle often continues long after they leave the ring. This harsh reality is something Muhammad Ali’s daughters, Maryum and Rashida Ali, know all too well. Their legendary father, who was celebrated as “The Greatest,” battled Parkinson’s disease for decades before passing away on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74. Now, his daughters are determined to help other athletes avoid a similar fate.
Championing a Cause
In an effort to honor their father’s legacy and protect other athletes, Rashida Ali has teamed up with The Ring of Brotherhood Foundation. Founded in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this organization aims to safeguard athletes’ health, with a particular focus on combat sports. The foundation was established by a dedicated team including Lisa McClellan, Pastor Kevin Person, Margie Ellis, and William Zimmerman, who share a common goal: to ensure that athletes are treated with the same respect and care off the field as they are on it.
Just a year ago, Rashida made her first appearance in the foundation’s ‘Remember The Future’ series—a campaign designed to encourage fans and the boxing community to prioritize the health and well-being of their heroes. The series, shot in Las Vegas by a professional film crew, sought to drive home the importance of valuing an athlete’s life over the thrill of the sport. Now, Maryum Ali has joined the cause, publicly supporting the foundation on social media.
Spreading the Message
Maryum took to Instagram to share Rashida’s campaign video, expressing her wholehearted support for the foundation’s mission. “Sounds like a great organization @rashedaali1,” she wrote, adding that the foundation is dedicated to assisting “all athletes [who] have suffered TBI, CTE, and other life-altering, sports-related injuries.” Her post is a rallying cry to fans, urging them to donate and support this crucial initiative.
The foundation’s work doesn’t stop at raising awareness. They offer concrete solutions, including treatment plans, baseline assessments, and diagnoses for athletes, all backed by their Clinical Research Committee (CRC). This committee is composed of top health professionals, biomedical engineers, and experts in regenerative medicine, ensuring that athletes receive the best care possible.
In a statement on their Instagram post they even claimed, “Through multi-media, The Ring Of Brotherhood Foundation plans to bring awareness by capturing and creating content that will inform, inspire & bring change in how people see athletes in contact sports.” Fast forward to today, even Maryum joined the initiative through a social media post to promote the campaign. Turning to Instagram, while sharing Rashida’s campaign video, Maryum wrote, “Sounds like a great organization @rashedaali1.” She explained that the organization advocates and aims to help “all athletes [who] have suffered TBI, CTE, and other life-altering, sports-related injuries.”

A Powerful Alliance
The Ring of Brotherhood Foundation’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In a significant move, the World Boxing Council (WBC) announced its collaboration with the foundation on September 14, 2023. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed his admiration for the foundation’s work, stating, “The WBC has been closely monitoring the formation and development of Ring of Brotherhood and has witnessed the passion and dedication they have to make a difference and serve those who deserve an opportunity to improve their quality of life.”
So, Maryum urged her followers, “If you love combat sports, I hope you can donate.”

Sulaiman, who has continued his father José Sulaiman’s legacy of prioritizing boxer safety, believes that this partnership could be transformative. “This alliance could be a game changer. We view it as the planting of a tree which will provide a shadow of comfort to those in need,” he added. The collaboration between the WBC and The Ring of Brotherhood Foundation represents a powerful step forward in the fight to protect athletes from the long-term consequences of their careers.

A Call to Action
The need for such efforts in the boxing community has always been evident. The sport is notorious for its physical toll on athletes, with many fighters suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and other life-threatening conditions. However, it is only now, through the determined efforts of individuals like Rashida and Maryum Ali, that significant steps are being taken to address these issues.
As the boxing world continues to evolve, the actions of Muhammad Ali’s daughters may very well set a new standard for how athletes are treated, both during their careers and after they leave the ring. Their dedication to this cause is not only a tribute to their father but also a beacon of hope for countless athletes facing similar challenges. The world will be watching closely to see the impact of their efforts.
