Mikaela Mayer Questions Coach Kay’s Loyalty as Sandy Ryan Rejects Fight Offer

The aftermath of Mikaela Mayer’s contentious loss to Natasha Jonas continues to ripple through the boxing world, with Mayer now setting her sights on reclaiming her status as a champion. However, recent developments suggest a potential roadblock in Mayer’s path—a rejected fight offer from WBO Welterweight champion Sandy Ryan, who trains under Mayer’s former coach, Kay Koroma.

After the split decision loss to Natasha Jonas, which cost her the IBF Welterweight title, Mayer expressed a desire for a rematch but appears to be targeting a different path for the moment. Reports indicate that Mayer’s team extended an offer to Sandy Ryan, aiming to secure a bout for the WBO title. Yet, Ryan swiftly rebuffed the proposal, citing it as “terrible” in terms of terms and conditions.

Ryan told “drama queen” Mayer that the “offer was terrible for me to defend my belt“. “I was advised differently by my team,” she added. Speaking of which Mayer wondered if Coach Kay hesitated “to stand in the opposite corner of me after 10 years together.”

Emotional Reactions on Social Media

On Twitter, Mayer publicly aired her disappointment, questioning whether Coach Kay Koroma, who now trains Sandy Ryan, might be avoiding a showdown between them after a decade-long association. In a fiery exchange, Mayer labeled Ryan’s decision and referred to her as a “drama queen,” implying a reluctance to face tougher competition.

Ryan countered, defending her stance on rejecting the offer, highlighting her team’s advice against accepting the terms presented by Mayer’s camp. This exchange not only exposed the underlying tension between the two fighters but also hint

“We sent an offer to @sandyryan93 a few weeks ago but she turned it down ay close attention to who she fights next. Some talk about it and some be about it!” wrote Mikaela Mayer on X. ed at potential professional strategies at play behind the scenes.

Potential Matchup and Promoter’s Influence

Meanwhile, promoter Eddie Hearn added fuel to the fire by publicly discussing potential opponents for Sandy Ryan’s return, including Mayer, Natasha Jonas, and Chantelle Cameron. Hearn’s statements sparked speculation about whether Mayer’s name was being used to generate interest in Ryan’s comeback fight, despite the rejection of Mayer’s initial offer.

“So, Sandy will be back in August/September. I think the Mayer fight is a great fight,” Eddie Hearn said. But, if Ryan was already “advised differently”

“Eddie Hearn’s enthusiasm for a Mayer vs. Ryan clash contrasts sharply with Ryan’s recent decision,” noted boxing insiders, raising questions about the sincerity of Hearn’s statements versus the realities of matchmaking in professional boxing.

As the drama unfolds, the boxing community awaits further developments, wondering if Mayer will secure a meaningful fight soon or if Ryan’s decision will lead to a different path for both fighters. The clash of personalities and professional strategies continues to add layers to what promises to be a compelling storyline in the world of women’s boxing.

“I don’t know what Natasha Jonas is doing. If she’s not fighting Mikaela Mayer, I would love to make that fight happen. I also love the Chantelle Cameron fight for Sandy Ryan,” added Eddie Hearn.
