Canelo Alvarez Under Fire: Mexican Legend Juan Manuel Marquez Demands Top Fights for the Champion

In a sport driven by high-stakes drama and legendary showdowns, the controversy surrounding Canelo Alvarez’s recent choice of opponents has ignited a fiery debate. With Alvarez poised to take on Edgar Berlanga in September, former three-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has publicly criticized the Mexican superstar for what he perceives as a series of underwhelming matchups.

Marquez’s Bold Critique

Juan Manuel Marquez, a revered name in boxing, has not minced words when discussing Alvarez’s recent fights. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Marquez challenged Alvarez’s pattern of hand-picking opponents, asserting that it deprives fans of the thrilling, high-caliber bouts they crave. “No, I think Canelo needs to fight the number-one opponents in every division—WBO, WBA, WBC. I don’t know what happened with the associations to make the fight. We need to see the great fights,” Marquez declared. His comments underscore a growing frustration within the boxing community about Alvarez’s selective approach to matchmaking.

The ‘Dinamita’ told Fight Hub TV, “No, I think Canelo needs to fight with the number-one opponents in every division—WBO, WBA, WBC. I don’t know what happened with the associations to make the fight. We need to see the great fights.”

Alvarez had declared, “If the money is right, I can fight right now. I don’t give a sh*t.”

Marquez’s call for a fight with top contenders, like David Benavidez, highlights a broader sentiment among fans and analysts who are eager for Alvarez to face fighters who truly challenge his supremacy. While Alvarez has previously stated his willingness to fight if the financial terms are right, Marquez’s critique raises questions about whether the current crop of opponents, including Berlanga, meets the standard of thrilling, top-tier competition.

The Business Side of Boxing

Canelo Alvarez’s ability to choose his opponents is not just a matter of personal preference but is also influenced by his substantial financial leverage. With a staggering $35 million per fight contract, Alvarez enjoys a level of financial security that allows him to be selective. Trainer Abel Sanchez echoed this sentiment, noting that Alvarez’s financial backing affords him the luxury of managing his choice of opponents while still ensuring lucrative paydays.

“The reality is that Canelo manages his choice of opponents well and knows he can make the same money regardless of who he fights,” Sanchez remarked. This financial cushion, combined with Alvarez’s considerable draw, has enabled him to focus on fights that are financially rewarding rather than those that necessarily satisfy fan demands or test his limits.

Trainer Abel Sanchez voiced the same opinion when he specified, “As things stand right now, Canelo manages his choice of opponents well and knows he can make the same money ($35 million) no matter who he fights.”

A Legacy Defined by Choices

Despite his massive earnings and ability to dictate terms, Alvarez’s legacy is intertwined with the quality of his opponents. His previous forays, including his notable bout against Dmitry Bivol, demonstrate that he is capable of stepping up when required. However, the anticipation surrounding his upcoming fights remains clouded by the debate over whether he is choosing the path of least resistance.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits Alvarez’s next move, the clash between financial considerations and the pursuit of legacy continues to dominate discussions. Will Alvarez respond to Marquez’s challenge and seek out fights that will etch his name deeper into the annals of boxing history? Or will he continue to prioritize lucrative opportunities that may not always align with the demands of boxing purists?

Editor’s Note:

Canelo Alvarez’s career is at a pivotal juncture. While his financial success and selective matchmaking have secured his position as one of the sport’s top earners, the challenge now lies in balancing commercial interests with the pursuit of memorable, high-stakes bouts. As fans and critics alike debate his choices, Alvarez’s next moves will be crucial in defining his legacy in the sport.
