Jaron Ennis Paves the Way for Jalil Hackett’s Matchroom Signing

The boxing world is abuzz with excitement as Jalil Hackett, America’s next big superstar, joins Matchroom USA. The 21-year-old phenom revealed to World Boxing News that Jaron Ennis played a crucial role in his decision to sign with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, setting the stage for a thrilling new chapter in his career.

Hackett’s Journey to Matchroom

Jalil Hackett is no stranger to the boxing community. Revered for his talent and work ethic, Hackett has been the preferred sparring partner for the hard-hitting Gervonta Davis. As a rising star previously under the wing of Mayweather Promotions, Hackett was highly sought after during his brief period as a free agent. Promoters lined up to sign him, recognizing his potential to become a cornerstone in American boxing.

The Ennis Connection

Hackett’s move to Matchroom was significantly influenced by Jaron Ennis, a top-tier welterweight with an impressive record of 31 wins and 28 knockouts. Ennis, signed by Matchroom in April, has long been admired by Hearn, who believed Ennis would become a pound-for-pound great. The relationship between the Ennis and Hackett families further solidified Hackett’s decision.

“I had talks with his team,” Hackett said. “His dad and my dad are close, and he and I are very close. So once we had talks, that did persuade me a little bit more.”

Eddie Hearn’s Vision

Eddie Hearn, the British boxing promoter behind Matchroom, has high hopes for Hackett. Announcing the signing at the end of May, Hearn described Hackett as a “fantastic young talent” and a “real gem.” His plan is to build Hackett into a future star, leveraging Matchroom’s extensive resources and platform.

The Signing Process

Hackett’s decision wasn’t taken lightly. He engaged in discussions with multiple promoters, evaluating their offers and career plans. Ultimately, it was Matchroom’s comprehensive strategy and the opportunity to fight alongside Ennis that won him over.

“Every promoter that exists reached out,” Hackett shared. “But Matchroom had the best layout, a helluva plan, and a helluva platform.”

Shared Path to Stardom

Hackett’s debut with Matchroom is set for July 13 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, where he will fight Peter Dobson. This event marks a significant milestone, not just for Hackett but also for Ennis, who was originally scheduled to defend his IBF world welterweight title against Cody Crowley. Although Crowley withdrew due to a retina injury, the event will proceed with a late replacement opponent for Ennis.

Anticipation and Excitement

Hackett is thrilled to fight on the same card as Ennis, expressing his excitement for the upcoming event. “I love it,” Hackett said, highlighting the camaraderie and shared ambition between the two fighters.

Hearn’s Persuasive Approach

Eddie Hearn’s personal touch was pivotal in securing Hackett’s signature. Meeting in New York during a press conference for Terence Crawford’s return to the ring, Hearn and Hackett quickly built a rapport. Hearn’s genuine admiration and strategic vision for Hackett’s career made a lasting impression.

“I appreciate him for the opportunity because that’s what this is,” Hackett said. “Nothing will be handed to me, or spoon-fed.”

The Future Looks Bright

Hackett is optimistic about his future with Matchroom, confident in the plans laid out by Hearn. His Matchroom debut will air on DAZN, offering a global stage for his talents. As Hackett steps into this new chapter, the boxing community eagerly awaits his ascent to superstardom.
