Jaime Munguia Takes a Bold Leap: Signs Co-Promotional Deal with Top Rank

In a move that could reshape his career, Jaime Munguia, the celebrated super middleweight fighter, has announced a significant shift in his professional trajectory. After a highly successful six-year tenure with Golden Boy Promotions, Munguia is now poised to embark on a new chapter with a multi-fight co-promotional agreement with Top Rank. This change marks a pivotal moment for the 27-year-old boxer, whose career has been a whirlwind of triumphs and challenges.

The End of an Era with Golden Boy Promotions

Jaime Munguia’s journey with Golden Boy Promotions, under the guidance of Oscar De La Hoya, has been nothing short of remarkable. Since his debut with the promotion in May 2018, Munguia has built an impressive resume, capturing the WBO junior middleweight title and defending it five times. His tenure with Golden Boy also saw him transition to the 168-pound division, where he shone brightly with a unanimous decision victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko—an electrifying bout that ESPN hailed as the 2023 Fight of the Year.

Despite the accolades and successes, the most anticipated match of Munguia’s career came against Canelo Alvarez. De La Hoya’s hopes were high for Munguia to defeat his former fighter, but Alvarez’s experience and skill proved too much. In a fight where Munguia showcased his aggression, Canelo’s superior tactics and a devastating uppercut led to a fourth-round knockdown and a unanimous decision victory for the champ.

A New Dawn with Top Rank

With his time at Golden Boy drawing to a close, Munguia is now set to join forces with Top Rank, headed by the venerable Bob Arum. The move signifies a fresh start and new opportunities for the Tijuana native. According to sources close to ESPN, Munguia’s debut fight under Top Rank is scheduled against Erik Bazinyan on September 20, 2024, in the Phoenix area. This match will mark a new era for Munguia, as he transitions from DAZN broadcasts to exclusive ESPN coverage.

Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Promotions, expressed his satisfaction with their accomplishments but remained tight-lipped about the specifics of Munguia’s future. “Jaime will make an announcement soon,” Beltran told ESPN. “We’re happy with everything we have accomplished with everyone.”

Munguia’s Resilience and Future Prospects

Despite the setback against Canelo Alvarez, Munguia remains undeterred. Reflecting on his defeat, he shared, “I felt good, I think I won the first rounds. He is a very experienced fighter; he beat me well. It hurt my first defeat. I started the rounds very well, but after that, he started to win the rounds.” Yet, he remains resolute, stating, “I am not sorry for anything,” and believing that his experience against Alvarez has strengthened him.

Looking ahead, Munguia’s upcoming bout against Bazinyan, a 32-0 Canadian fighter, could be a strategic move to regain momentum. While Bazinyan has yet to face high-profile opponents or win world titles, the fight is a critical opportunity for Munguia to reaffirm his status and build towards future championship pursuits. In boxing, where a single punch can alter the course of a fight, Munguia must stay sharp and focused.

“Jaime will make an announcement soon,” Zanfer CEO Fernando Beltran revealed to ESPN. “We’re happy with everything we have accomplished with everyone. … If we look for options or platforms or whatever, that’s not for me to say.”

A Changing Landscape in Boxing

Munguia’s transition to Top Rank highlights the dynamic nature of boxing promotions and the constant evolution of a fighter’s career. With Top Rank’s extensive reach and promotional prowess, Munguia is positioned to make significant strides. As fans await his debut under the new banner, the anticipation builds for what could be a transformative period in his career.

“I felt good, I think I won the first rounds, he is a very experienced fighter, he beat me well, it hurt my first defeat. I started the rounds very well, but after that he started to win the rounds,” Munguia told ESPN.

The Road Ahead

The path forward for Jaime Munguia is laden with opportunities and challenges. His upcoming fight against Erik Bazinyan is not just a bout but a statement of intent—an assertion that Munguia remains a formidable contender in the super middleweight division. As he embarks on this new chapter, the boxing world will be watching closely to see how he adapts and thrives under Top Rank’s banner.

However, he said that he was “not sorry for anything” as he felt he gave the people a “good fight.”
