“No Ring in the Backyard: Israel Adesanya Rejects Jake Paul’s Fight Proposal Amid COVID-19 Pandemic”

In a recent revelation, UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya disclosed an intriguing encounter with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Speaking on Demetrious Johnson’s MIGHTYcast, Adesanya recounted an unexpected invitation from Paul to engage in a backyard boxing match during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reflecting on a night of fight commentary that included Mike Tyson’s return against Roy Jones Jr. and Paul’s bout with Nate Robinson, Adesanya revealed that Paul extended an invitation to his home following the event. However, what followed was an unexpected proposition that left Adesanya taken aback.

Amidst the casual hangout, Adesanya discovered that Paul had set up a makeshift ring in his backyard and had intentions of sparring with the UFC champion. Despite the novelty of the offer, Adesanya swiftly declined, emphasizing that he was present for enjoyment rather than engaging in impromptu combat.

Adesanya said, “You know what’s funny? When I was at, when Jake fought Nate Robinson, I commented on that fight. Mike Tyson fought Roy Jones. And I watch that live, and blah, blah, blah, blah. Meet Jake Paul at the hotel, then he invites me to his house, get there, crazy.”

“And then at one point, there’s a ring in the backyard and I got word through someone, that oh, this guy is trying to get Izzy in the K, in the ring.” The New Zealander was there just for fun. He wanted no part in the backyard fighting scheme. “And I said nah. I’m here to have fun. I ain’t doing none of that”, he added.

This isn’t the first time Adesanya has brushed off the idea of facing Paul. In a previous interview on ‘Ignore the Noise’, Adesanya expressed admiration for Paul’s commitment to boxing but dismissed the notion of stepping into the ring with him, citing his focus on mixed martial arts rather than boxing.

Adesanya’s refusal to entertain Paul’s backyard brawl proposal underscores his dedication to his craft and his reluctance to engage in spectacles outside of his professional realm. Despite the intrigue surrounding a potential matchup between the two fighters, Adesanya remains steadfast in his commitment to his chosen discipline.

“Jake Paul’s no joke, man”, he reasoned.

While the encounter between Adesanya and Paul may have sparked curiosity among fans, it ultimately serves as a reminder of the boundaries between entertainment and sport, with Adesanya prioritizing his career over impromptu challenges.
