“Cruz vs. Canelo: A Clash of Titans? De La Hoya’s Bold Statement Ignites Boxing World!”
In a dramatic turn of events on March 30th, Isaac Cruz emerged victorious over Rolando Romero, securing the WBA Super-Lightweight championship title. With his exceptional display of skill and dominance, Cruz left fans questioning whether he could potentially claim the mantle of Mexico’s boxing hero. However, amidst the buzz surrounding Cruz’s triumph, all eyes turned to boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya for his thoughts on the matter.
In a recent interview with FightHype, De La Hoya expressed some reservations about whether Cruz had already surpassed the legendary Canelo Alvarez as the face of Mexican boxing. Acknowledging the rising talents like Jaime Munguia and Isaac Cruz, De La Hoya contemplated the possibility of a passing of the torch ahead of the Alvarez vs. Munguia bout on May 4th.
The conversation around Isaac Cruz’s status in Mexican boxing isn’t new. Back in 2022, Sean Gibbons of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions hailed Cruz as the new face of Mexican boxing. Following Cruz’s impressive victory over Romero, Julio Chavez Jr. echoed Gibbons’ sentiment, asserting that Cruz could potentially dethrone even the likes of Gervonta Davis. However, when asked directly if Cruz had overtaken Canelo Alvarez, De La Hoya treaded cautiously, emphasizing Canelo’s continued dominance.
Chavez Jr. said, “I think he’s the best fighter in Mexico.”
“I mean, obviously, Canelo is still Canelo,” De La Hoya began.
“It’s going to be huge with Munguia. But a lot of these young lions are right behind him. They’re right behind him. Trying to take that throne. Trying to take that crown away from Canelo. So, it’s a matter of time obviously. Only time will tell, right?” said De La Hoya, hinting at the fierce competition brewing in the boxing world.
While De La Hoya refrained from explicitly anointing Cruz as the face of boxing, he didn’t shy away from praising Cruz’s remarkable performance against Romero. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Cruz’s future, De La Hoya sees immense potential in the young boxer, acknowledging his power and precision in the ring.
“It’s going to be huge with Munguia. But, a lot of these young lions are right behind him. They’re right behind him. Trying to take that throne. Trying to take that crown away from Canelo. So, it’s a matter of time obviously. Only time will tell, right?” said Oscar De La Hoya.
“You have these young kids who are 26, 27 years old. Canelo’s already been there, done that. That’s why I’m saying May 4th could be the passing of the torch. It could be,” he concluded.
As speculation swirls around Isaac Cruz’s place in Mexican boxing history, one thing remains clear – the boxing world eagerly awaits the showdown between Cruz and Alvarez. Whether it marks a passing of the torch or a reaffirmation of Alvarez’s reign, one thing is certain: the clash between these two titans will be nothing short of legendary.
“Rolly getting knocked out by Pitbull Cruz was a surprise. But every great champion must face defeat at some point. It’s part of the journey,” said Oscar De La Hoya.
