Terrified Heather Hardy Opens Up About Serious Brain Damage: “What’s Done Is Done”
In a poignant revelation, Heather Hardy, the 42-year-old former world champion, has opened up about a life-altering brain injury she sustained following her last fight in 2023. The injury, which caused severe inflammation around her optic nerves, has forced Hardy to confront the possibility that her illustrious combat sports career may be coming to an end.
The Harrowing Reality
Heather Hardy took to Instagram earlier this year to share the difficult news. In a post that has since resonated deeply with fans and fellow fighters alike, she described the terrifying reality of living with brain damage. “Inflammation around the optic nerves in my brain,” she wrote. “Since August 2023, I not only had brain damage, I had a big, fat, swollen brain. That still hasn’t had time to get better, and friends, that’s terrifying. After all, I am just a girl, right?”
Despite the smile she wore in her photos, Hardy’s words betrayed the deep emotional turmoil she has been enduring. The once unbreakable fighter was now grappling with the harsh realities of her condition, a situation that has left her feeling helpless.
The Unseen Struggle
Hardy’s struggles didn’t end with her Instagram post. In a subsequent update, she revealed the ongoing nature of her brain injury. “Brain damage is one thing; it’s just dead brain you’ll never get back,” she stated bluntly. “You can weep for it, but what’s done is done.” The weight of her words was palpable, as she faced the irreversible nature of her injury.
Her condition is so severe that Hardy has been advised to protect her brain at all costs. Yet, the resilient fighter continues to push through her daily life, even when it seems impossible. “My brain is swollen too—I feel like I should wrap a pillow around it, and I have to hop on a Citi bike in 20 minutes to go to work. Make that make sense,” she expressed with frustration.
She said, “Inflammation around the optic nerves in my brain. So since August 2023, I not only had brain damage I had a big, fat, swollen brain. That still hasn’t had time to get better, and friends, that’s terrifying. After all, I am just a girl, right? ❤️🩹🧠”
“Brain damage is one thing; it’s just dead brain you’ll never get back,” she said. However, she further added that there’s no point dwelling on it: “You can weep for it, but what’s done is done.”
The Fight That Never Was
Hardy’s condition came to light just before she was set to make her bare-knuckle debut against Christine Ferea, BKFC’s flyweight champion, in May 2024. The bout, scheduled for BKFC 61, was highly anticipated, but Hardy was forced to pull out at the last minute. “My fight for May 11 is off,” she announced via Instagram. “After my fight last summer with Amanda, my vision remained blurred for a few days. I went for an MRI and to get my eyes checked while I was still in TX, and it was diagnosed as the aftereffects of a concussion.”
The decision to withdraw from the fight was not made lightly. Hardy, who has always been a warrior in and out of the ring, had to consider the toll the sport was taking on her health. After light sparring, she experienced blurred vision for nearly two days, a clear sign that her brain was no longer able to withstand the impact of fighting. Doctors warned her that continuing could lead to permanent blindness, a risk Hardy could not afford to take.
Heather Hardy updated, “My fight for May 11 is off. After my fight last summer with Amanda, my vision remained blurred for a few days. I went for an MRI and to get my eyes checked while I was still in TX and it was diagnosed the aftereffects of a concussion.”

A Painful Decision
Faced with the reality of her situation, Hardy made the agonizing choice to step back from the sport she loves. “So I said the thing 😔 ya know what that means,” she wrote, leaving her followers to speculate on whether this meant retirement. The sadness in her message was undeniable, as Hardy, a fighter to the core, faced the possibility of never stepping into the ring again.
