Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley & NFL World Go Wild at Gervonta Davis’ Knockout Blow of Frank Martin

In a fight that will be talked about for years, Gervonta “Tank” Davis delivered a stunning knockout to Frank Martin, sending shockwaves through the sports world. The fight, which took place over eight grueling rounds, culminated in a dramatic finish at 1:29 of the eighth round, with Davis cornering Martin and landing the decisive blow. The victory not only solidified Davis’ dominance in the ring but also captivated stars across the NFL.

NFL Stars React to the Knockout

The excitement wasn’t contained to the boxing community. NFL players were quick to share their reactions on social media, demonstrating the wide-reaching impact of Davis’ victory. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was among the first to express his admiration, tweeting, “Tank CBFW 😤,” signifying his respect for Davis’ prowess.

Not everyone was purely celebratory, though. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel expressed his disappointment for Martin with a succinct, “Welpp!!!!!”

Even former NFL star LeSean McCoy shared his thoughts, noting Davis’ relentless approach: “Tank bout to knock him out .. I ain’t never see tank go straight forward all night .. he making FRANK FIGHT with all that pressure.”

Gervonta Davis’ Dominance

Davis’ win over Martin adds to his already impressive record. Now the undefeated WBA Lightweight Champion, Davis boasts a 30-0-0 record with 28 knockouts. Since his professional debut in 2013, he has claimed titles across three weight classes: super featherweight, lightweight, and super lightweight. His previous fight against Ryan Garcia in April 2023 also ended in a knockout, solidifying his reputation as a formidable force in boxing.

Frank Martin, known as “The Ghost,” faced his first career defeat against Davis. Despite his valiant effort, Martin’s record now stands at 18-1-0 with 12 knockouts. The bout was a testament to Davis’ skill and determination, as he retained his title and continued his undefeated streak.

The NFL-Boxing Connection

The enthusiastic response from NFL players highlights a longstanding relationship between football and boxing. Over the decades, several NFL athletes have transitioned into the boxing ring, driven by a passion for both sports.

Charley Powell, who made history as the youngest player drafted in the NFL, embarked on a boxing career in 1953. Powell’s boxing record of 25-11-3 included notable bouts, such as his 1959 fight against Nino Valdes and a 1969 clash with Muhammad Ali, which lasted three rounds before Ali secured victory.

Other NFL players who ventured into boxing include Ed Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, who competed from 1979-80, and Mark Gastineau of the Jets, who had a 15-2 boxing career from 1991-96. Alonzo Highsmith, a former Buccaneers fullback, recorded a 27-1-2 boxing career between 1995-98. More recently, athletes like Ray Edwards, Tom Zbikowski, Gerald Washington, and Dominic Breazeale have pursued professional boxing.

Editor’s Perspective

Gervonta Davis‘ knockout of Frank Martin wasn’t just a win for him; it was a spectacle that brought together fans and athletes from various sports. The cross-sport camaraderie shown by NFL stars underscores the universal appeal of boxing’s raw and unfiltered excitement. Davis’ performance not only reinforced his status as a champion but also bridged the gap between boxing and football, creating a shared moment of awe and admiration.
