Davey Moore, the 29-year-old boxer who lost his heavyweight title Thursday in the city where he won it, died today at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.

Governor Brown of California reiterated his commitment today to pursue a vote in the state Legislature to ban all boxing events in California. In the Senate, Democratic Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee said he would re-introduce long-standing rules governing state boxing. “David Moore’s death,” he said, “is another mark in the history of human abuse in the boxing industry.”

As governors and other lawmakers consider their own laws and ways to strengthen them, the Roman Catholic leader is reiterating the Pope’s condemnation of boxing in the Many cities, saying that it is “unfair” and the boxing industry is also a good reason to complain, because one crime is more than a crime. Overnight, it became clear that David Moore’s fatal injury was not a blow from champion Sugar Ramos. Neurosurgeons at a Los Angeles hospital yesterday compared their clinical findings to slow motion films of all ten rounds of the fight, especially the final moments. They were confused and reluctant to connect Moore’s specific injuries to the human wounds known in the book. It’s “a small bruise on the frontal trunk at the base of the brain,” said Dr. Cyril Courville, master of the trio. The coma is caused by swelling, not blood (which usually occurs during severe strokes).

The replay showed Moore slumped over on a chair in the corner of the ring after hitting his opponent, his head slightly tilted against the ropes. In the next second, the rope (which at that time was almost non-existent, but easily broken) jumped out and went back around the boxer’s neck. As a result, last night doctors said this was the “primary cause” of Moore’s brain disease.

Dr. Cowell was confirmed by two other neurosurgeons. When they were done, they played the tape several times and observed Moore’s behavior and struggles during the final episode. He was undoubtedly looking good for the first couple of minutes of the round until a left hook shook his knees. He nodded but stood up again after quickly evaluating his error. But he never recovered his balance when Ramos caught him with three consecutive left hands. He then falls backwards into the corner, onto the floor, and into the ropes.

An autopsy could not determine whether Moore’s death was caused by the fall or previous injuries. Bob Dylan later wrote a song called “Who Killed David Moore” in response to the growing hatred of boxing following Moore’s death.

Ashley’s thoughts:

Davey Moore was a champion boxer who died in a title fight in 1963, and his death remains a poignant moment in boxing history. The sports world was shocked by Moore’s death and debate over the ethics and safety of boxing.

After Moore’s death, there was a huge call to action to correct the ills of boxing. Governor Brown of California has vowed to implement laws aimed at banning boxing in his state, indicating a growing awareness of the importance of athlete safety .

Democratic Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need to review the state’s boxing laws. Moore’s tragic death is a stark reminder of the dangers athletes face in the ring and has prompted lawmakers to reevaluate safety measures.

The outcry over Moore’s death went beyond politics, with Roman Catholic Church leaders calling boxing illegal and morally offensive. The boxing industry itself faced scrutiny and criticism, calling for greater accountability and action to prevent future incidents.

Medical experts evaluated the nature of Moore’s traumatic injuries, revealing the brain trauma he suffered during the war. Slow-motion video analysis by a neurosurgeon showed the exact moment Moore was injured and eventually died, pointing to the need for more medical surveillance in boxing. Despite efforts to understand the cause of Moore’s death, questions remain about boxing’s role in society and the responsibilities of those involved in the sport. Bob Dylan’s haunting song “Who Killed Davey Moore” captures everyone’s pain and grief after Moore’s death, a powerful reminder of the human cost of boxing.

As we reflect on David Moore’s legacy, we are reminded of the challenges boxing faces today and the need to focus on the lives of athletes. Moore’s tragic death is a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance and remedial action to prevent a repeat of those bouts on the boxing ring.
