In the relentless world of boxing, Ryan Garcia’s journey has been one marked by triumph, turmoil, and above all, resilience. Almost a year since his first career loss at the hands of Gervonta Davis, the specter of that fateful night continues to haunt him as he prepares to face Devin Haney in what promises to be the toughest fight of his career.
As questions lingered about his inability to overcome Davis in their Las Vegas showdown, Garcia finally opened up about the myriad challenges he faced leading up to and during the bout. From a grueling rehydration clause in the contract to battling severe dehydration and a separated rib, Garcia bared his soul, revealing the harsh realities that marred his performance in the ring.
For Garcia, signing off on the rehydration clause was a calculated risk, a bold attempt to inject excitement back into a sport he felt had grown stagnant. Despite warnings from his promoter and the toll it took on his body, Garcia stood firm, determined to push the boundaries of the sport he loves.
But it wasn’t just physical ailments that plagued Garcia that night. The mental and emotional toll of the loss weighed heavily on him, pushing him to the brink of despair. Yet, amidst the darkness, Garcia found a glimmer of hope, a newfound strength born from adversity.
On the Full Send Podcast, he explained, “I did everything I could to try to propel boxing forward. For that shit was boring as f*ck and nobody was fighting each other so, I took every clause you could think of.”
However, according to Garcia, it was not just the rehydration clause that marked his disadvantage. “I stepped into the ring with a separated rib, and this is not an excuse but I was severely dehydrated, so anything I got touched with, affected me in the ring when I was sparring. I had blisters all over my mouth, I had heat flashes at night, I was severely shaking at night,“ he revealed.
He remarked, “When you’re going through a mental-health crisis, you don’t care about life. So, me trying to get back into the sport and trying to be myself, it was a hard process… And then after the Tank fight, I woke up. I was like, ‘No I’m different. I’m about to go and destroy everybody now’.”
In a startling revelation, Garcia disclosed that despite the defeat, he emerged richer in more ways than one. Beyond the hefty paycheck he received, the experience served as a catalyst for personal growth, igniting a fire within him to reclaim his rightful place among the boxing elite.
As he prepares to step back into the ring once more, Garcia stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit, a fighter undeterred by setbacks and fueled by an unyielding determination to conquer the odds stacked against him.
