Brian Norman’s Father Blasts Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing Over Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis Fight Dispute
In a dramatic twist to the welterweight division, the saga involving Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Brian Norman Jr. has reached a boiling point. The controversy centers on Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, as they struggle to secure a unification bout for their latest star, IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. Hearn’s ambitious plans to bring Ennis into the spotlight have hit a significant roadblock, revealing deep-seated tensions and communication breakdowns.
According to a recent interview on the Matchroom Boxing YouTube channel, Hearn disclosed that his team extended offers to three prominent champions: Mario Barrios (WBC), Brian Norman Jr. (WBO), and Eimantas Stanionis (WBA Regular). However, all proposals have been met with rejection. Hearn emphasized, “We’ve made offers to Brian Norman—WBO champion, Mario Barrios—WBC champion, and Eimantas Stanionis—WBA champion—all have been rejected. We’ve made two offers now for Brian Norman, both rejected.”
Hearn’s frustration was palpable as he recounted the lack of a “counter offer” from Norman Jr.’s camp. This led to Brian Norman Sr., Norman Jr.’s father and trainer, stepping into the fray with a heated response. According to Norman Sr., his team did, in fact, send a counter offer to Matchroom, but it appears the promotion’s legal team was unaware of it.
“After Eddie Hearn’s interview yesterday, we immediately contacted Matchroom’s lawyers to inquire about the supposed rejections. The lawyer responded with, ‘Oh, we didn’t realize you sent a counter offer,’” Norman Sr. said, clearly exasperated.
He went on to criticize the offers received from Matchroom, describing the first as “ridiculous” and the second as “close to acceptable.” Despite this, Norman Sr. reported that when they requested a final offer, there was no response from Hearn’s side. “We asked, ‘What’s your final offer?’ There’s been no response, nothing since then,” he added.
“We’ve made offers to Brain Norman – WBO champion, Mario Barrios – WBC champion, and Eimantas Stanionis – WBA champion – all have been rejected. We’ve made Top Rank two offers now for Brian Norman, both rejected,” Hearn said. The Matchroom head further stated that he has not received any “counter offer” from Norman Jr’s team either. Brian Norman Sr., stated that a “counter offer” was indeed sent to Matchroom, but the company’s lawyer wasn’t aware of it.
“After Eddie Hearn did his interview yesterday, we reached out immediately to Matchroom lawyers – the ones that sent the offer – and asked ‘What is this about us declining 2 offers?’ Matchroom lawyer comes back with ‘Oh we didn’t realise you sent a counter offer’,” Norman Sr. stated bluntly.
He further revealed that the first offer that Eddie Hearn’s fight promotion sent was “ridiculous”, and the second one was “close” to his expectations. However, a request for a “final offer” from Norman Jr’s team was met with silence according to Norman Sr. “The first offer (from Matchroom) was ridiculous, the second offer was close and we can work with that a little bit. We asked ‘What’s your final offer?’ There’s been no response, nothing since then,” he noted.
Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ Reaction
As the dispute heats up, Jaron Ennis remains resolute in his pursuit of unification. The IBF champion has expressed his intent to consolidate his titles, emphasizing his frustration with any delays. “I don’t care if Norman is next or if the fight is for undisputed; I want to collect these belts. My focus is on becoming undisputed. I want to hold the WBC, WBO, WBA, and Ring Magazine titles,” Ennis told YSM Sports Media.
In response to accusations from Norman Jr. that he rejected the fight, Ennis stood firm. “I sent an offer, and Norman turned it down,” he asserted. Norman Jr. has countered these claims, asserting that the blame lies with Ennis for the fight not coming to fruition.
Norman Jr.’s Perspective
Brian Norman Jr. has his own take on the situation, vehemently denying any refusal to fight. Instead, he blames Ennis for allegedly delaying the bout. “My dad contacted Bozy [Ennis’ trainer] and said we accepted the fight. Bozy replied that they weren’t ready and wanted to save it for an undisputed clash. So, it’s not us who said no,” Norman Jr. claimed.
Both Ennis and Norman Jr. recently transitioned from interim to full champion status with the WBO and IBF, respectively, following Terence Crawford’s move to the 154-pound division. The ongoing disputes underscore the complexities of high-stakes boxing negotiations and the challenges Hearn faces in delivering a blockbuster bout.
He has made it clear that his next fight will be a unification bout in the welterweight division. “I don’t care [if Norman is next or for undisputed], I want to collect these belts, and I keep saying, I’m frustrated. I don’t want any backward fights; my whole thing is to be undisputed. My mindset is focused on WBC, WBO, WBA, and Ring Magazine. I want to be undisputed,” Boots told YSM Sports Media.
What’s Next?
As Eddie Hearn navigates these troubled waters, the question remains: Can he fulfill Ennis’ aspirations for a unification bout? The stakes are high, with both Hearn and the fighters keen on securing a lucrative deal that ensures a successful pay-per-view event. With tensions rising, all eyes will be on how Hearn handles this intricate negotiation and whether he can bring the welterweight division together for a monumental showdown.
