Eddie Hearn Weighs In on Ryan Garcia’s Positive Test: Is the Weight Cut the Real Culprit?

The boxing world was rocked recently when Ryan Garcia, the young and brash fighter known for his explosive knockouts, tested positive for ostarine, a banned substance. This revelation came after a turbulent fight week, leaving fans and pundits to speculate about the underlying causes of the positive test. Eddie Hearn, the seasoned promoter with extensive experience handling drug test controversies, has offered a provocative perspective that could shed light on the situation.

Hearn’s Insight: A Veteran’s Perspective on Drug Test Controversies

Eddie Hearn, who has overseen nearly 50 positive drug tests throughout his career, spoke candidly about Garcia’s case during a recent episode of the “All the Smoke Fight” show hosted by undefeated boxer Andre Ward. The British promoter expressed his astonishment at the situation, highlighting the unique circumstances surrounding Garcia’s positive test.

Hearn revealed, “I’ve dealt with 50 positive drug tests in my promotional career for various fighters. But this case with Ryan Garcia left me stunned. The presence of ostarine in his system the night before and during the fight is particularly alarming.”

He admitted, “Listen, I’ve had 50 positive drug tests in my promotional career for different fighters. I know how it goes down. But this one was just like [jaw drop], you know.”

“So you know categorically that it was in his system during the fight. Not they cycled out 12 weeks ago… And you know it was in him in the fight. If I’m honest, knowing [having] been through all these different 50 cases, it would lead me to believe that it was in relation to the weight cut,” Hearn explained to Andre Ward.

The Weight Cut Conundrum

According to Hearn, the key issue might be linked to Garcia’s struggle to make weight. The promoter suggested that Garcia’s use of ostarine was likely a desperate measure to manage his weight cut. “From my experience, seeing how these cases unfold, it seems plausible that the substance was used to help him make weight,” Hearn explained. This perspective aligns with Garcia’s notorious struggle with weight issues, which was evident during his pre-fight preparations.

Garcia’s weight missteps had already made headlines, culminating in a hefty $1.5 million fine for missing the weight limit. Hearn’s insights suggest that the pressure to meet weight requirements may have driven Garcia to use ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug that can aid in muscle retention and weight management.

Garcia’s Defiant Response and the Call for a Rematch

Despite the controversy, Ryan Garcia remains defiant. He has publicly challenged Devin Haney to a rematch, asserting his confidence in overcoming him again. On social media, Garcia expressed his readiness to prove himself clean and competitive. “I’d beat him twice. I beat him easy,” Garcia declared, emphasizing his willingness to undergo rigorous testing to clear his name. “They can test me every week, every day. Cameras in my camp, full transparency. But he won’t beat me,” Garcia added, signaling his commitment to proving his innocence.

The Saudi Arabian Gambit: Will Garcia Fight Clean?

Adding another twist to the saga, HE Turki Alalshikh has expressed interest in hosting a potential rematch in Saudi Arabia, contingent upon Garcia coming clean regarding his substance use. This proposal adds an international dimension to the ongoing drama, with Garcia’s next steps under intense scrutiny.

He said, “I would beat his [backside] twice. I beat him easy.” In addition, he registered his desire to be tested regularly before the fight to dispel doubts about his taking PEDs. He continued, “They could blood test me every week. Every day. They could have a camera in my training camp. They could know everything. But this man will not beat me.”

Editor’s Take: The Broader Implications

This unfolding drama not only impacts Garcia’s career but also casts a spotlight on the broader issue of weight management and drug testing in boxing. Hearn’s revelations underscore the pressing need for stricter oversight and better support systems for fighters dealing with the immense pressures of the sport. As the story develops, boxing fans and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how Garcia navigates these turbulent waters and whether he can restore his reputation and prove his mettle in the ring.
