Olympic Bronze Medalist Breaks Down Dmitry Bivol’s Boxing Style

Dmitry Bivol stands tall in the boxing world, currently ranked as the 7th best pound-for-pound fighter by Ring Magazine. But what makes the Russian light heavyweight such a formidable presence in the ring? Is it his skill, his style, or his strategic brilliance? According to Olympic Bronze medalist and former professional boxer Tony Jeffries, it’s a combination of all these factors that make the 33-year-old an unstoppable force.

Bivol is preparing for a highly anticipated showdown against Artur Beterbiev on October 12th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Initially set for June 1st, the fight was postponed due to Beterbiev’s injury. As the new date approaches, Jeffries is ramping up the excitement, providing an in-depth analysis of Bivol’s boxing style and explaining why Bivol is such a standout talent in the sport.

Dmitry Bivol: A Perfect Specimen

Earlier today, Tony Jeffries took to Twitter to share a vintage training clip of Bivol showcasing his impressive pad work with his trainer. Jeffries dissected Bivol’s technique, marveling at the fighter’s long reach and precision. “Look at how long his arms are. And he is turning this hook over with his palm down,” Jeffries noted, emphasizing Bivol’s ability to maximize his reach advantage.

Jeffries highlighted Bivol’s Eastern-European boxing style, praising his seamless combination of punches. It’s a style that helped Bivol solve the Canelo Alvarez puzzle, handing the Mexican legend his second career loss. Bivol’s success against Alvarez can be attributed to his long reach, larger frame, and relentless pressure. Jeffries pointed out that while Bivol’s style might not be flashy, every punch he throws carries the intent to dismantle his opponent.

Jeffries said, “You think well, this is the way to do it. But throwing a hook like that, close up, short range is pretty hard”.

Bivol’s footwork. Jeffries said, “Look, how he is keeping his feet apart. All the time he is moving. This means he is always in the position to throw them punches”.

Technical Mastery and Footwork

Jeffries was particularly impressed by Bivol’s lead hook technique, where Bivol throws with his palm facing down. This approach, though unconventional, demonstrates Bivol’s adaptability and precision at close range. “You think well, this is the way to do it. But throwing a hook like that, close up, short range is pretty hard,” Jeffries remarked, highlighting the technical prowess Bivol brings to his game.

Bivol’s footwork also caught Jeffries’ eye. “Look at how he is keeping his feet apart. All the time he is moving. This means he is always in the position to throw those punches,” Jeffries observed. This constant movement and positioning ensure Bivol remains ready to strike, maintaining his offensive and defensive capabilities.

Bivol’s Future: Focus on the Light Heavyweight Crown

While fans eagerly await the clash with Beterbiev, many are also speculating about a potential rematch with Canelo Alvarez. However, Bivol recently clarified his stance on this matter. “I don’t have him in my schedule and my mind,” Bivol stated, underscoring his primary goal of becoming the undisputed champion at 175 pounds.

Reflecting on his victory over Alvarez in 2022, Bivol acknowledged the impact it had on his career but remained focused on his future objectives. “Maybe in the future, we could see each other again. But, not in the soon future. I can’t see it,” Bivol said. Considering Canelo’s recent reluctance to fight David Benavidez, a rematch with Bivol seems even less likely.

The Road Ahead: Bivol vs. Beterbiev

With professional evaluation from Tony Jeffries, it is glaring that the October showdown among Bivol and Beterbiev is set to be legendary. Beterbiev, together with his perfect knockout ratio, poses a widespread risk to Bivol’s reign within the mild heavyweight division. This conflict of titans guarantees to be a test of talent, power, and method.

Jeffries’ breakdown of Bivol’s boxing style adds some other layer of anticipation to the fight. Will Bivol’s technical mastery and strategic brilliance be enough to overcome Beterbiev’s uncooked electricity and aggression? As the fight date techniques, the boxing world watches with bated breath, geared up to witness a warfare for the ages.
