Dana White’s No-Holds-Barred Critique of Boxing Commentators and His Vision for UFC’s Future

Las Vegas, NV – Dana White, the indomitable CEO of UFC, has been a transformative force in mixed martial arts, consistently driving the organization to new heights. At 54, White’s relentless pursuit of excellence is evident in everything from organizing blockbuster fights to pioneering production innovations. However, his journey hasn’t been without its controversies, particularly his outspoken disdain for certain boxing commentators of yesteryears, with Larry Merchant often bearing the brunt of his critiques.

White’s Relentless Quest for UFC Dominance

Dana White’s impact on UFC is undeniable. Since taking the helm, he has revolutionized the sport, elevating its global profile and ensuring UFC events are spectacles of entertainment and athleticism. His commitment to enhancing the viewer experience is unmatched, making UFC a leader in sports production.

“All those guys were terrible. They were terrible.” He further pointed out what kind of problems he faced during the process. He said, “At that time, HBO boxing was the gold standard of sport. But nothing had really changed except HD. They put money on it but I would have to mute the commentators all the time.”

The Problem with Boxing Commentators

In a candid interview with Brian Kilmeade on FOX NEWS, White didn’t mince words about his frustrations with boxing commentators from the past, particularly singling out Larry Merchant. White revealed that he often muted the commentators while watching boxing matches due to their perceived disrespect towards fighters.

“All those guys were terrible. They were terrible,” White stated bluntly. He criticized the commentators for being out of touch and condescending, particularly recalling an incident involving Merchant and Floyd Mayweather. “Larry Merchant jumping up and telling Floyd Mayweather that if he was 30 years younger, he would kick his ass. No, you wouldn’t. The disrespect to say that. They were clowns to me.”

“I don’t buy this event to listen to you idiots. Who think you know all about boxing, you know. You, Larry Merchant jumping up and telling Floyd Mayweather that if he was 30 years younger, he would kick his a… No, you wouldn’t.

The HBO Boxing Era: A “Gold Standard” with Flaws

White acknowledged that during its peak, HBO Boxing was considered the gold standard in sports broadcasting. Despite this, he felt their production had stagnated, relying too heavily on outdated methods and not adapting to technological advancements. “Nothing had really changed except HD,” he remarked, noting that the quality of commentary failed to match the high-definition visuals.

UFC’s Cutting-Edge Production

Contrasting this with UFC’s approach, White highlighted his pride in UFC’s production team, emphasizing their innovative spirit and willingness to embrace new technology. In a recent podcast with Randall Kaplan, White discussed how UFC continuously seeks to enhance the viewing experience, whether fans are watching at home or in bars.

“That’s what we do with the live event production,” White explained. “If you’re at home or if you’re in bars, every one of them is a different experience… We’re always first, or one of the first, to jump on new technology to try to integrate into our production that I feel HBO never did.”

“That’s what we do with the live event production, you know. If you’re at home or if you’re in bars, every one of them is a different experience… The other thing you’re asking about, production. The other thing that we do is there’s always new technology that comes out in production.”

Innovating for the Future

White’s forward-thinking approach ensures that UFC remains at the forefront of sports entertainment. He believes in learning from past mistakes and constantly pushing the envelope to deliver unparalleled live event productions. This philosophy has not only set UFC apart from its competitors but also cemented its reputation as a trailblazer in the sports industry.

White said, “We’re always first, or one of the first, to jump on new technology to try to integrate into our production that I feel HBO never did”.

Editor’s Insight

Dana White’s fiery comments and relentless drive for excellence highlight his unwavering commitment to UFC’s success. His critique of boxing commentators underscores his broader philosophy: respect for the sport and its athletes is paramount. By prioritizing innovative production and viewer experience, White ensures that UFC remains a dynamic and evolving entity in the world of sports entertainment.
