There was a time when Vergil Ortiz Jr. spoke. will follow.

Those days seem not so long ago. Those days are gone forever. Boxing is a dynamic sport that is constantly changing. It moves with or without you. It moves by you or by you.

Ortiz is full of energy. So will the future. He was highly regarded, named the 2019 Rookie of the Year by BoxingScene.com, The Ring Magazine, and ESPN, and is known for his four victories, including victories over Mauricio Herrera, Antonio Orozco, and Bu Ladd Solomon.

“No one was knocked down until Ortiz knocked him out three times in six rounds,” boxing reporter Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com. “Virgil Ortiz Jr. is an aggressive, aggressive fighter with physicality, low-key boxing skills and a fan-favorite personality,” said Anson Wainwright in The Ring’s year-end newsletter.

“The biggest question of 2020,” wrote Jack Donovan on BoxingScene, “is how high the welterweights will be.”

The coronavirus pandemic put boxing on hold for most of 2020. However, in 2021, Ortiz blossomed from rookie to contender, winning two more fights. Former junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker was knocked out in seven fights. Egidijus Kavaliauskas finished the race in eight minutes. Everyone wants to see how Ortiz adapts to the prestigious 147-pound division. At the top of the list are two names: Errol Spence and Terence Crawford. There are two names on the line: Jalen Butz-Ennis and Virgil Ortiz.

A lot has changed. Many things remain the same. Ennis has been arrested but is still in the spotlight as a welterweight fighter. Ortiz is no longer eligible until 2021 and will not be nearly as popular as he once was.

It’s not Ortiz’s fault. He was sidelined due to health issues, including a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis, a condition that causes muscle tissue to break down, enter the bloodstream and threaten the kidneys. Ortiz took about 12 months off, between his win over Kavalliskas in August 2021 and his scheduled fight against Michael McKinson in August 2022. There was another 17 months between McKinson’s victory and his return against Frederic Lawson in January of this year.

The fight that made Ortiz’s career move forward – against opponent Emmaantas Stanionis – did not happen. The Stanionis fight was postponed twice – first when Stanionis had his appendix removed, second when Ortiz’s rhabdomyolysis returned – and Ortiz was finally scheduled to fight.

It’s a fair question if Ortiz’s health issues will resurface if he is able to return to the ring. Otis felt the same way. “When everything fell apart, right before I went to the hospital, I thought I was done,” Ortiz told boxing writer Keith Adek earlier this year. – I was like, – Man, are we going again? damn it! What happened? What is wrong with me? I tried my best here and gave 110% but I can’t? I cried, not knowing what was going to happen.

Doctors now believe that Ortiz’s rhabdomyolysis is a long-term result of many cases of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021. But he stopped the biggest names in the welterweight division and paid and attention. The Lawson fight was Otis’ first time competing in the junior middleweight division.

He is undefeated at 20-0 (20 KOs) but has not been seen in this new phase. The match against Thomas Duolme on Saturday will not change these things. However, Ortiz will have another chance. It’s an opportunity to take advantage. It’s not about what happens. It’s about something real out there.

Also on the cards, or closer, is a fight on August 3 with Tim Tszyu on the card under the stars against Crawford, who will face the Islay 154-pound title a Israel Madrimov. This is another Saudi-funded show, though the first in the United States. Unlike other promoters and investors who want to make a profit, these Saudi events invest heavily in boxing matches for other reasons.

Tszyu was the former middleweight titleholder when he lost the belt to Sebastian Fundora last month. At the end of the second round, Tsyu’s head was severely cut by a sudden elbow. Increasingly bloodied, lethargic and tired, he found it increasingly difficult to face Fundora, a late-combat opponent with a significant height advantage. Ortiz visited Tsiyo before the Fundola incident. Tsyu’s defeat made the fight even better even though he was no longer a threat for a world title fight.

A win for Tszyu would put him in the conversation at 154, giving Fundora another match, or the winner of Crawford-Madrimov or Spence moving up the division, the return of Jermell Charlo.

A win for Ortiz puts him back in the position he was in in his first two junior middleweight fights: against Lawson in January and this Saturday against Duolme.

Ortiz’s victory over Lawson lasted less than one round and ended with an early stoppage by referee Tony Weeks. No matter how long this war lasts, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean much; in a new weight class, and after a long time, Lawson is Ortiz’s entry-level opponent.

Dulorme – Ortiz’s opponent in a DAZN tag team match with Jose Ramirez vs. Rances Barthelemy – the first name Let the enemy be defeated. This should not be a competitive battle. Durom has gone through his first season, with a record of 2 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss in the last seven matches. He has three straight losses in 2020 and 2021 and has no junior varsity record. Ortiz-Duolme suspects imbalances, corrections, and opportunities to stay active and shake off the remaining toxins. But Ortiz needs to win for the Tszyu fight to be valid.

Ortiz wants it. However, the fight against Tszyu will mark his first international opponent. Winning there means more wins.

Time has come for Ortiz. Five years ago, he was the ultimate dream. Three years ago, he competed. The next stage – the next stage – is only three months away.
