Canelo Alvarez Celebrates Marco Alonso’s Silver Medal: A Heartfelt Tribute to Mexico’s Boxing Star

In the aftermath of the Paris 2024 Olympics, a wave of pride and celebration is sweeping through Mexico, highlighted by a heartfelt gesture from one of the country’s boxing legends. Canelo Alvarez, the reigning super middleweight champion, has extended a special tribute to Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez, who clinched a silver medal in the welterweight division. This gesture not only honors Marco’s incredible achievement but also reaffirms the rich boxing tradition that Mexico proudly upholds.

A Silver Lining in Paris

The welterweight final saw Marco Alonso battling against Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev in what was a thrilling contest. Despite a valiant effort, Marco fell short of gold, with Muydinkhujaev securing a decisive victory. This result, however, does little to diminish the significance of Marco’s achievement. Securing silver for Mexico is a monumental accomplishment, adding to the nation’s impressive tally of five medals at the Games—three silvers and two bronzes.

Canelo Alvarez, whose own journey to the ring has been filled with triumphs and trials, took to Instagram to congratulate his compatriot. His message, “Gracias por poner el nombre del boxeo mexicano en alto,” translates to “Thank you for putting the name of Mexican boxing up,” underscoring the pride and admiration felt by the boxing community. Canelo’s tribute resonates deeply, reflecting the supportive spirit that characterizes Mexican boxing.

Canelo Alvarez expressed his gratitude and congratulated the young welterweight. “Gracias por poner el nombre del boxeo mexicano en alto,” said Alvarez on his Instagram story, which roughly translates to “Thank you for putting the name of Mexican boxing up.”

The Journey of a Fighter

Marco Alonso’s road to the Olympic finals was marked by perseverance and skill. Beginning his campaign on August 1, he faced Tiago Muxanga in a challenging round of 16 bout. Despite the tough competition, Marco emerged victorious. The quarterfinals saw him overcoming Nishant Dev after a hard-fought match, and in the semifinals, he edged out Lewis Richardson, securing his spot in the final.

The final against Muydinkhujaev was a clash of titans. Marco managed to win the third round, but it was not enough to overturn the judges’ unanimous decision in favor of the Uzbek boxer. The close and competitive nature of the bout highlights Marco’s resilience and fighting spirit, qualities that have garnered respect and admiration.

A Legacy in the Making

Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez’s achievement holds profound significance for Mexico, marking the country’s return to Olympic boxing prominence after a 40-year hiatus. The last time Mexico secured a silver in boxing was at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics with Hector Lopez in the bantamweight category. This achievement is a testament to the enduring legacy and passion for boxing in Mexico, a country that has produced some of the sport’s greatest talents.

Marco’s dedication to the sport is reflected in his impressive amateur record of 46 fights, with 39 wins and 7 losses. His journey, beginning six years ago, has been marked by notable victories and a strong commitment to excellence. The silver medal he earned is a proud moment for Mexico and a sign of promising future successes.

Their message read, “With an indomitable spirit, Marco has hung up the silver medal for Mexico in Paris 2024. Their triumph is a reflection of the passion and effort of all Mexicans.”
