Canelo Alvarez’s $200M Demand Stirs Combat Sports Controversy; Conor McGregor Faces Backlash for His Bold Comments

In a twist that has ignited a fierce debate within the combat sports community, Canelo Alvarez’s extravagant demand for a $200 million payout has stirred up controversy and fueled a public spat with Conor McGregor. Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, is set to fight Edgar Berlanga on September 14, the same night as UFC 306. However, the boxing icon’s request for an astronomical fee to face David Benavidez has sparked reactions from all corners of the sports world.

Canelo Alvarez’s $200 Million Standoff

Canelo Alvarez’s lofty demand comes with a hefty price tag. The boxer’s camp has reportedly asked for $200 million to fight Benavidez, citing the high stakes and risks associated with such a high-profile bout. Alvarez defended his demand, stating, “Obviously he’s a risk, he’s a great fighter. Plus he brings to the ring on fight night 25lbs more than me. It’s a risk but I don’t care. If the money’s right it can be tomorrow.”

This statement has not only turned heads but has also drawn sharp criticism, most notably from Conor McGregor. The UFC star took to social media to deride Alvarez’s request, calling him a “cornflake” and dismissing his value in the current market. McGregor wrote, “Canelo is a cornflake. He has about 300k buys in him. He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid. UFC NOCHE is going to run them from the strip. Sheik Turki was right moving on. CANELO DOESN’T SELL.”

The Fallout: McGregor’s Controversial Comments

McGregor’s remarks have not been well-received by all. Fans and fighters alike have rallied against McGregor, accusing him of hypocrisy given his own recent inactivity and struggling fight record. “How is the pinky toe doing Conor?” one user quipped, referencing McGregor’s injury woes and prolonged hiatus from MMA.

The timing of McGregor’s comments also coincides with former President Donald Trump’s praise for Khabib Nurmagomedov, which added fuel to the fire. Trump’s endorsement of Nurmagomedov led McGregor to launch a scathing attack, calling the former champion from Dagestan “a smelly fat mountain monkey from the inbred mountains of Dagestan.” This exchange has not only intensified McGregor’s feud with Alvarez but also stirred political and sports commentary.

Fan Reactions and The Battle of Public Perception

The response from the public has been a mix of scorn and support. Critics argue that McGregor’s commentary is misplaced, especially as he remains sidelined with a poor recent record. “You haven’t won a fight since before COVID. Stop being a keyboard warrior,” read one comment. Others pointed out that Alvarez’s earnings and marketability far surpass McGregor’s current standing. “Canelo Alvarez fights twice a year and generates a massive $110 million for himself,” noted a fan, defending Alvarez’s high demands.

On the other hand, some fans echoed McGregor’s sentiments, suggesting that Alvarez’s request is excessive. “Canelo would break your face… so there’s that,” one fan wrote, reflecting the sentiment that Alvarez’s demands might indeed be inflated.

Conor McGregor took to his X handle to write, “Campaign ending decision. A smelly fat mountain monkey from the inbred mountains of Dagestan is your favorite UFC (AMERICAN COMPANY) fighter? Wow. Abysmal.”

Canelo’s Market Value and the Fight’s Feasibility

Despite the backlash, Alvarez’s market value is indisputable. His career earnings of approximately $500 million highlight his status as one of boxing’s biggest stars. Alvarez’s $10-$30 million guaranteed purses per fight reflect his drawing power, making his demands not entirely out of the realm of possibility, albeit controversial.

Editor’s Note:

The escalating feud between Canelo Alvarez and Conor McGregor highlights the complexities of fighter negotiations and public perceptions. While Alvarez’s high demands reflect his significant market value, McGregor’s criticisms underscore the competitive and often contentious nature of combat sports. As the situation develops, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how this public dispute influences both fighters’ futures.
