The Rise of Hamzah Sheeraz: The Middleweight Division’s Next Giant
Hamzah Sheeraz is quickly making a name for himself as the dominant force in the middleweight class with an exciting show of strength and talent. Sheeraz crushed Tyler Denny on September 21, 2024, via spectacular second-round TKO, a triumph that thrusts him into the public eye. His devastating performance stunned the audience and solidified his reputation as the “nightmare” and “big giant” of the 160-pound class, which has been without a dominant player since the end of the careers of Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.
With an unblemished record of 21-0 (17 KOs), this 6-foot-3-inch British phenomenon has eliminated 15 opponents in a row. The current champions Janibek Alimkhanuly, Carlos Adames, and Erislandy Lara received a terrifying message from Sheeraz after his most recent knockout victory: whomever dared to take on Sheeraz next would probably lose their title. Sheeraz is demanding respect and recognition in a division that is starving for a new leader by beating loudly on these champions’ doors.
A Department Seeking a Star
There hasn’t been a new competitor in the 160-pound weight class since Golovkin’s heyday in the middleweight category. Middleweight boxing has a long history of popularity, thanks to the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Carlos Monzon. Nonetheless, the attention has waned recently. The division started to lose its appeal as fighters started to go up in weight and champions started to avoid certain matchups.
Presenting Hamzah Sheeraz, a fighter with a special blend of stature, quickness, and knockout power evocative of bygone eras. Sheeraz’s ability to methodically destroy every opponent he faces makes it obvious that he is more than simply another prospect. The future belongs to him.
Winners Avoiding the “Big Giant”
The excitement around Sheeraz has only intensified as rumours began to circulate that Janibek Alimkhanuly, the WBO champion from Kazakhstan who is at 15-0 (10 KOs), declined a $1.5 million deal to take on Sheeraz. Boxing insiders were scratching their heads when Alimkhanuly chose to defend his title in Sydney against Andrei Mikhailovich for a meagre $200,000 instead. Alimkhanuly’s situation was made more difficult when the WBO declined to approve the fight as a championship defence.
Many people think Sheeraz’s time is coming while he waits in the wings. “You already know what champions think of Sheeraz when you see them ducking and dodging,” stated Timothy Bradley Jr., a Hall of Fame fighter and current ProBox TV pundit. He is capable of fighting both inside and outside. He’s young and incredibly cunning. It’s just a question of time.
Sheeraz is the top-ranked challenger to Carlos Adames’ title according to the WBC, which puts further pressure on the defending champs. The question now isn’t if Sheeraz deserves a chance, but rather when one will come for him.
The Fear Factor: The Reluctance of Champions
There’s an obvious sense of terror around Hamzah Sheeraz. Sheeraz is the newest dominant fighter in the middleweight class, and his stature and strength are causing havoc on opponents. Boxing pundits and previous champions have been praising him for his ability to go between inside and outside combat with ease. “Sheeraz appears to be a man who will be around for a long time,” remarked Paulie Malignaggi, the former Middleweight Champion. “He has been winning in a weight class that has always been flashy with eye-catching power. He is quite hazardous.
Even the legendary boxer Timothy Bradley Jr. was impressed. Sheeraz, in his words, is the “whole package”—a fighter possessing the skill, stature, and willpower to rule for many years to come. Bradley did, however, pose one query: What will Sheeraz do if he is hit flush on the chin? If a champion stands up, that question may have an answer very soon.
It’s evident, though, that not everyone is excited to meet the emerging star. Alimkhanuly’s choice to turn down a sizable salary in order to keep Sheeraz at bay tells you a lot about the Kazakh’s anxieties.
“If Alimkhanuly turns that down, it shows they believe the hype,”
Bradley stated.
An Obligatory Task Is Up Next
The sanctioning bodies are the only thing separating Sheeraz from a world championship. There are competitors and duties for the IBF, WBO, and WBC, but Sheeraz’s time is running out. Although Mikhailovich, who is now ranked higher than Sheeraz, was able to clinch the title shot against Alimkhanuly, the IBF has campaigned for obligatory challenges through 2024. Sheeraz is without a doubt the next in line, though.
For reputable commentator and former 140-pound champion Chris Algieri, the situation is obvious.
“This youngster has it everything. His size and power make him something truly unique. Right now, he’s prepared for the champions, Algieri stated. “
The only question is which sanctioning body will take the initiative and make Sheeraz mandatory.”
Malignaggi thinks Sheeraz’s easiest way to get his first title fight is to go with Adames. He stated, “Adames is the easiest title bout to make,” alluding to the dearth of contenders vying for the WBC title right now.
Middleweight Boxing’s Future
Not simply another promising fighter, Hamzah Sheeraz represents the middleweight division’s future. With every victory and knockout, Sheeraz gets closer to securing his spot in the annals of history. Boxing fans and insiders alike are buzzing with excitement over his potent combination of skill, personality, and power.
The true question still stands, though: Who will stand up to this enormous man? Which one of Adames, Lara, or Alimkhanuly will put Sheeraz to the test? Or will they keep avoiding the man who seemed to be destined for greatness?
Sheeraz will keep training in the interim while he waits for his chance. But don’t worry, Hamzah Sheeraz will be prepared to take advantage of that opportunity when it arises. Although there hasn’t been much activity in the division for a while, the era of supremacy is about to start with Sheeraz at the door.
