Roy Jones Jr. Provides Update on Potential Tommy Fury Fight
In the realm of boxing, where legends are forged and rivalries ignite like wildfire, the possibility of a showdown between Roy Jones Jr. and Tommy Fury has set tongues wagging and pulses racing. With a staggering 30-year age gap between the two fighters, skeptics have scoffed at the idea, yet Jones Jr. remains undeterred, stoking the flames of anticipation with his recent revelation.
In a recent interview with Boxing King Media, Jones Jr. peeled back the layers of speculation surrounding a potential exhibition bout with Fury. Recalling their encounter in Saudi Arabia, where discussions first began, Jones Jr. addressed the skepticism head-on. “People joked about it, but that may seem a realistic proposition,” he remarked, acknowledging the initial laughter that greeted the idea.
“In Saudi when I met you recently we talked about, I got you and Tommy Fury to face off. People joked about it but that may seem a realistic proposition. Could that be back on?”
“I mean you got to think about it,” he said. “If Tommy Fury fought Jake Paul, Mike’s three years older than me. So if they can fight why can’t me and Tommy fight, if we wanted to, if Tommy wanted to fight.”
However, Jones Jr. wasted no time in confronting the elephant in the room: the significant age difference between himself and Fury. Drawing parallels to the upcoming bout between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, he posed a poignant question: “If they can fight, why can’t me and Tommy fight?” It was a challenge to the naysayers, an assertion of his readiness to defy age and expectations.
“But I don’t think they really interested. I think they just gonna move in another direction or they probably waiting for a rematch with Jake Paul, because he beat Jake before and Jake keep making his name bigger by doing things like he’s doing now. So that makes the payday bigger for Tommy.”
Yet, amidst the fervor and anticipation, Jones Jr. couldn’t help but express reservations about Fury’s intentions. Casting a shadow of doubt over the likelihood of the bout, he suggested that Fury may be eyeing other opportunities, particularly a lucrative rematch with Jake Paul. It was a sobering reminder of the harsh realities of the fight game, where financial incentives often dictate the trajectory of careers.
As speculation swirled and fans clamored for answers, the spotlight shifted to Tommy Fury himself. Following in the footsteps of his brother, Tyson, Fury made headlines with his aspirations for a comeback of his own. In an interview with DAZN, he boldly set his sights on MMA icon Conor McGregor, igniting a firestorm of excitement and intrigue.
“Yeah, definitely. I’m looking to get this out of the way, nice and recovered and I’ve seen, you know Jake Paul’s fighting Mike Tyson. I mean, why not, me and McGregor next? How’s that? I’ve got a comeback fight and I’d like him to for me return. So, McGregor, get in touch,” he stated
With each passing day, the saga of Jones Jr. versus Fury continues to captivate the imagination of fight fans worldwide. Will age prove to be nothing but a number for Jones Jr., or will Fury seize the opportunity to make a statement of his own? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: in the unpredictable world of boxing, anything can happen.
