The European Boxing Union has ordered Jordy Weiss to fight former champion David Avanesyan for the EBU Welterweight title. Funding will begin on Monday, May 6, unless prior approval is received.

Former WBA welterweight champion Avanesian, with a record of 30-4-1 (18 KOs), won his first European title in 2019 when he traveled to Bilbao and competed in nine fights. Kerman Lejarraga was the best of the region during the war. The German made five saves and built a reputation as a ruthless, good fighter.

Avanesian will finally surrender the EBU title before his WBO welterweight title fight against Terrence Crawford in December 2022. The Armenian was in good form in Omaha before the superstar showed his class and grabbed a big win in the sixth round.

The following April, Weiss defeated Spaniard Jon Miguez, 32-0-1 (3 KOs), for the vacant belt, but had to settle for pay. He captured the prestigious title the following October, defeating Meriton Karaxha and successfully defending it.

Avanesian has only boxed once since losing to Crawford, stopping Serge Umbermo in four rounds in December.

The decision of the EBU gives the 35-year-old famous boxer a chance to regain the title he never lost in the ring and the way back to the big tournament. Weiss, 30, will have another chance to test his international credentials.

“We’ve been in the hot seat many times with potential fights, but the truth is we’re happy to be patient and wait for the right opportunity because it’s the right fight. We also understand the importance of the EBU title and how it works for David. What a big deal that was back in the day,” Avanesyan’s manager, Neil Marsh, told BoxingScene.

– David really likes this title. He is used to chasing this belt, called the European Champion, and he wants it back.

Ashley’s thoughts:

The European Boxing Union has called for an EBU welterweight title fight between former champion David Avanesyan and current champion Jordy Weiss. The fight will start on Monday, May 6, pending the final approval, which promises to be an important moment in the careers of both boxers.

Avanesian, a former WBA welterweight champion with an impressive 30-4-1 record, is no stranger to European title fights. He captured the EBU title in 2019 with a stunning victory over Kerman Lejarraga, which established him as one of the top fighters in the welterweight division. Although Avanesian vacated his title to fight WBO title holder Terrence Crawford, he is determined to regain the European crown and pave the way for a return to winning ways. In contrast, EBU Welterweight champion Jordy Weiss has been successful since capturing the vacant belt last October. Weiss has proven himself as a champion in the division with a 32-0-1 record, showing his ability to overcome tough opponents. However, facing Avanesian will undoubtedly be his toughest test yet as he looks to cement his status as a European boxing legend.

For Avanesia, the chance to compete for the European title is huge. His agent Neil Marsh praised Avanesyan’s deep connection to the EBU title and his efforts to regain it. Marsh emphasized the importance of patience and taking chances in the right ways, and highlighted Avanesia’s ability to be crowned European champions once again.

Boxing fans are eagerly anticipating a fight between Avanesyan and Weiss as anticipation grows for the highly anticipated fight. With both fighters hungry for victory and the prestigious EBU welterweight title on the line, this fight promises to bring fireworks and cement the legacy of a champion in history European boxing.
