Ryan Garcia’s trainer Derrick James was honored after Garcia’s win over Devin Haney on Saturday night.

The 2022 Teacher of the Year will be an amazing show in 2023, with Errol Spence Jr. lost one side to Terence Crawford), Jermell Charlo lost a unanimous decision to Saul–Canelo–Alvarez.

James also trained Frank Martin to a narrow victory and helped Anthony Joshua for two fights before AJ chose to train in the UK rather than the US. In March, he defeated Oscar Duarte.

James, the 52-year-old former boxer-turned-trainer, took his first bite at the 2024 apple on Saturday, as Garcia bit Haney, knocking him down three times to win by decision. the majority.

“I’m happy with the accomplishment,” James told the media after the game. – Looks like I’ve done my job. Anyway.

– I think this is the best [victory of my training career]. Do you know? I think that’s great because I don’t want to put one person’s situation above another’s. …I got to this point because of what I did. The Hall of Fame coaches never taught me that. Nobody taught me anything. I pushed myself to this level. I’m a loser, anyway. Even now, at my current level, they still think I’m lonely.

Garcia was also ruled out of the fight, where he was deemed unfit due to his reckless behavior leading up to the fight and his lack of boxing skills compared to the dominant figure Haney.

Although Garcia weighed 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound fight weight limit, he showed enough skill — and more importantly, power — to defeat Haney.

“That’s great for Ryan,” James said. -I am happy for him. He really beat her. Did you see [Honey’s face shot]? He’s crazy [he’s a boss]. I don’t believe it.

– I think it would have been better if [Haney] was knocked down [early] because it’s hard to recover after being hit. He is very good at fighting. He will be back. He is still young. He might be hungry. He is 25 years old.

– The game plan was to get everything from [Haney]. When I saw Ryan holding the vaccine and walking towards him, he backed off and attacked Haney.

Garcia outshot Haney 106-87 and landed 95 of those punches. All three knocks came from his left hook.

Now that Garcia is coming off the best win of his career, James can’t wait to watch his team continue to rise in and out of the ring.

The Texan is hoping that Garcia, 25, doesn’t do too much.

“Good, I hope so. I don’t like this,” said James. ——I was really angry. I don’t really move like this. I don’t like being hurt. My daughters were at school and the kids were talking to them. why? Ryan’s work and this and that. I told him it doesn’t just happen to you, it happens to other people.
