Claressa Shields Sparks Heated Debate Over Female GOAT Title: Fans Weigh In

As the world of female combat sports continues to evolve, the debate over who reigns supreme as the greatest of all time (GOAT) has been reignited by none other than Claressa Shields. The 29-year-old boxing sensation has declared herself as the pinnacle of female fighting prowess, a bold proclamation that has ignited a fierce discussion among fans and pundits alike.

Shields, known for her unmatched prowess in the boxing ring, first burst onto the global stage at the tender age of 17, securing Olympic gold in 2012. Her remarkable achievements did not end there; she followed up with another Olympic gold in Rio in 2016 and continued her dominance as a professional, claiming titles across five weight classes. Her list of accolades includes being an undisputed champion in two weight divisions, a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication.

Recently, Shields took to social media to assert her claim to the title of the greatest female fighter ever. In response to a post by Boxing Kingdom asking fans to name their top female fighter, Shields confidently declared, “YOU KNOW! To me, I am!” This declaration has not only fueled the ongoing debate but also highlighted the polarizing views within the boxing community.

The debate is far from one-sided. While Shields has her staunch supporters, including fans who admire her unbeaten record and numerous titles, others argue that her claim to the GOAT title is contested by other legendary figures in female combat sports. A fan voiced support for Shields but also expressed a desire to see her face off against Alycia Baumgardner, a bout that would potentially solidify Shields’ claim. However, the significant weight difference between the two fighters has made such a match-up unlikely.

Shields had declared, “Muhammad Ali is first, and Claressa Shields is second. I am the greatest woman of all time, and 98 per cent of men in the world can’t beat me.”

Shields and Alycia Baumgardner wrote, “I believe you are but I want to see you vs Alycia Baumgardner.”

Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali  noted, “I’m sure Laila Ali would have a different opinion.”

Amanda Serrano and argued that it was the former who was “better”. They claimed, “Better than Amanda Serrano for sure in my eyes !!”

The comment read, “Boxer yes, combat sports no.” Another fan contested the same argument and maintained, “Boxer, yes! Fighter, has yet to be proven in MMA.”

Another vocal critic of Shields’ claim is the legendary Laila Ali, daughter of the iconic Muhammad Ali. Ali’s dominance in the super middleweight division and her perfect record of 24-0 make her a formidable competitor in any GOAT discussion. Fans who support Ali argue that her legacy in female boxing sets a high bar that Shields has yet to surpass.

Adding to the complexity of the debate, some fans have compared Shields to Amanda Serrano, a Puerto Rican fighter known for her impressive career but with a few losses on her record. One fan argued that Serrano might be a superior fighter, though Shields remains undefeated. Others emphasize the distinction between boxing and broader combat sports, noting that while Shields excels in boxing, her MMA record—a mixed 2-1—does not yet prove her dominance in the wider combat arena.

Amanda Nunes, a former UFC two-division champion, has also been suggested as a contender for the GOAT title. Nunes holds numerous records in the UFC, including most KO wins in women’s history and an impressive number of title fights. Her achievements in MMA provide a strong counterpoint to Shields’ boxing-centric legacy.

As the debate rages on, it is clear that Claressa Shields‘ assertion has catalyzed a broader conversation about the greatest female fighters across different disciplines. The discussion is a reflection of the diverse opinions and criteria fans use to judge greatness in combat sports. While Shields’ accomplishments are undeniable, the search for the ultimate female GOAT remains an ongoing and passionate discourse among enthusiasts.
