Gervonta Davis Criticized for Lacking “Greatness” Mindset Compared to Legends Pacquiao and Duran

Gervonta “Tank” Davis, known for his electrifying knockouts and flamboyant backflips, is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling fighters in boxing today. The Baltimore native, with an undefeated record of 30-0, has consistently captivated fans with his explosive power and aggressive style. However, a growing chorus of critics and fans alike have begun to question whether Davis truly possesses the mindset of a legendary fighter—one that seeks to conquer the best of the best and unify titles across divisions.

The criticism stems from what many perceive as Davis’s reluctance to challenge other champions in the sport. Despite holding world titles since 2017, first as the IBF super featherweight champion and now as the WBA lightweight champion, Davis has yet to engage in a unification bout with other top contenders. This hesitation to chase additional gold has left fans puzzled and sparked comparisons to all-time greats like Manny Pacquiao and Roberto Duran, both of whom were never afraid to face the toughest opponents and accumulate multiple titles.

This sentiment was echoed by popular YouTuber and boxing analyst ShowBizz The Adult in a recent video that has since gone viral. ShowBizz, while acknowledging Davis’s immense talent and knockout prowess, criticized the 29-year-old for lacking the “Duran mindset” or “Pacquiao mindset”—a burning desire to dominate multiple weight classes and secure his place among boxing’s greatest. In his video, ShowBizz stated, “Here is my problem with Tank. My problem is I wish he had the Duran mindset. I wish he had a Pacquiao mindset, like I wish he wanted to be welterweight champion. Pacquiao was 5’5″, right?”

He said, “Here is my problem with Tank. My problem is I wish he had the Duran mindset. I wish he had a Pacquiao mindset, like I wish he wanted to be welterweight champion. Pacquiao was 5’5″, right?”

ShowBizz went on to compare Davis favorably in terms of physical attributes and skill, even placing him ahead of Pacquiao in some areas. However, he emphasized that without the drive to challenge the best across different divisions, Davis’s legacy might fall short of greatness. “I just wish he had that mindset to say ‘I’m gonna conquer 147. I’m gonna conquer 140. Teofimo Lopez, you are next’. If he had that mindset, we’re talking about an all-time great fighter. I think his abilities are all-time. But I’m saying greatness. I just wish he had that mindset,” ShowBizz added.

The criticism has resonated with many boxing fans who have long yearned to see Davis step up to face other elite fighters. Despite his accolades and undefeated record, the absence of high-profile unification fights has cast a shadow over his otherwise stellar career.

Interestingly, Davis himself has shown a degree of frustration with his current situation. After being elevated by the WBA following Devin Haney’s departure from the 135-pound division, Davis was candid about his feelings towards the title, referring to the belt as “sh*t,” a remark that only further fueled discussions about his commitment to unifying titles.

After putting Davis, at 30-0, ahead of ‘Pacquiao’ in fitness, punching power and calling him “slicker,” ShowBizz The Adult continued, “I just wish he had that mindset to say ‘I’m gonna conquer 147. I’m gonna conquer 140. Teofimo Lopez, you are next’. If he had that mindset, we’re talking about all-time great fighter. I think his abilities is all-time. But I’m saying greatness. I just wish he had that mindset.”

However, there may be hope on the horizon for those eager to see Davis in more significant bouts. Promoter Eddie Hearn, who recently signed rising star Shakur Stevenson, has expressed a strong desire to match up Stevenson against Davis. The two fighters have exchanged verbal jabs for some time, but a concrete showdown has yet to materialize. Hearn, known for his ambitious matchmaking, has laid out a potential path for Stevenson that could culminate in a clash with Davis, stating, “For me, what we do is go Joe Cordina, William Zepeda, Gervonta Davis.”

Hearn has even suggested that a Stevenson-Davis showdown could happen as early as 2025. Whether this fight comes to fruition remains to be seen, but the mere prospect has already generated significant buzz in the boxing community.

The potential matchup between Stevenson and Davis could be exactly what Davis needs to silence his critics and prove that he belongs in the conversation with the likes of Pacquiao and Duran. A victory in such a bout would not only add another title to his collection but also solidify his legacy as one of the all-time greats—a fighter who wasn’t just content with being the best in one division but aspired to dominate them all.

As the boxing world watches and waits, one thing is clear: Gervonta Davis is at a crossroads. Will he rise to the challenge and chase greatness, or will he continue to be haunted by comparisons to legends who were never satisfied with just one belt?
