Joe Rogan Highlights Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Greatness Through Unexpected Matchup Against Ricky Hatton
In the world of combat sports, few names carry the weight and legacy of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Known for his impeccable record and unmatched defensive skills, Mayweather has often been the subject of debate among fight fans and analysts. While Canelo Alvarez is frequently mentioned in the same breath as Mayweather, Joe Rogan recently shifted the conversation in a surprising direction. On a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan compared Mayweather not with Alvarez, but with the British boxing icon Ricky Hatton, bringing to light a lesser-discussed aspect of Mayweather’s greatness.
Rogan’s Unexpected Comparison
During episode #2191 of his podcast, Rogan sat down with Hollywood actor Russell Crowe for a wide-ranging discussion that eventually turned to boxing. The conversation took an intriguing turn when Rogan brought up Ricky Hatton, a fighter known for his relentless, front-foot style and impressive record of 45 wins out of 48 fights. Hatton, dubbed “The Manchester Mexican” for his aggressive fighting approach, was widely respected for his ability to pressure opponents and land devastating punches.
Rogan, however, used Hatton’s 2007 bout against Mayweather to illustrate the American’s extraordinary skills. In Rogan’s view, it was this fight, rather than Mayweather’s more publicized victories, that truly showcased the boxing legend’s greatness.
Rogan said, “It’s also you have to have this ridiculous belief in yourself that you’re the best of all the, all the elites out there, you’re the number 1. You’re the guy that can get it done. Ricky Hatton in his prime was a bad man. Yeah, he was a mauler. Mauler, too. Just so hard-nosed. Just come at you.”
He said, “Which is why, you know, his, some of his [Hatton’s] loss at the Floyd Mayweather one an example. It just shows how great Floyd was. He was able to weather that and figure out the openings.”

Mayweather vs. Hatton: A Defining Moment
The Mayweather-Hatton fight was highly anticipated, with many expecting Hatton’s aggressive style to pose a significant challenge to Mayweather. From the outset, Hatton applied relentless pressure, forcing Mayweather onto the back foot. Despite this, Mayweather remained composed, employing his signature defensive tactics to weather the storm.
As the fight progressed, it became clear that Hatton’s approach was taking a toll on him. By the 10th round, Mayweather saw his opportunity. With Hatton showing signs of fatigue, Mayweather unleashed a perfectly timed left hook that sent the British fighter to the canvas. Though Hatton managed to get back on his feet, it wasn’t long before another devastating hook from Mayweather ended the fight.
For Rogan, this victory was a testament to Mayweather’s ability to adapt and overcome even the most relentless opponents. “It just shows how great Floyd was,” Rogan remarked, highlighting Mayweather’s skill in identifying and exploiting weaknesses in his opponents.
Rogan’s Admiration for Mayweather’s Prowess
Rogan’s admiration for Mayweather doesn’t stop at the Hatton fight. In previous episodes of his podcast, Rogan has consistently praised Mayweather’s defensive genius, often comparing him to other boxing legends. One notable comparison was with Vasyl Lomachenko, the Ukrainian fighter known for his high fight IQ and aggressive style. While Rogan acknowledged Lomachenko’s brilliance, he couldn’t place him above Mayweather, particularly when it came to defensive mastery.
“Lomachenko is, in my eyes, the best. The way he moves is insane, and he’s super aggressive. But he’s not like Floyd Mayweather, who is arguably the best ever—you know, multiple-time world champion in multiple divisions—but much more defensive oriented, brilliantly defensive, very economical,” Rogan stated.
Rogan opined, “…Lomachenko [is], in my eyes [is] the best. The way he moves is insane, and he’s super aggressive. Mayweather’s Legacy: Beyond the Numbers
What sets Mayweather apart, according to Rogan, is not just his 50-0 record, but his ability to adapt to any style and find a way to win. Whether facing a powerful knockout artist like Hatton or a technically gifted opponent like Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather’s skill set allowed him to rise to the occasion time and again. His use of the Philly Shell defense, popularized through his masterful shoulder roll, has become one of the most studied techniques in boxing.
Mayweather’s ability to combine defensive brilliance with precision punching has solidified his place as one of the greatest boxers of all time. His victory over Hatton, in particular, stands out as a defining moment that demonstrated not just his physical skills, but his mental toughness and strategic acumen.
Rogan’s Perspective: A Tribute to Mayweather’s Greatness
As Rogan’s discussion with Crowe made clear, Mayweather’s greatness is not limited to his most publicized victories. By revisiting the Hatton fight, Rogan offered a fresh perspective on why Mayweather deserves his place at the pinnacle of the sport. While fans and analysts may continue to debate who the greatest boxer of all time is, Rogan’s analysis of the Mayweather-Hatton fight serves as a compelling argument in favor of “Money” Mayweather.
