Floyd Mayweather’s Hypocrisy Under Fire: Boxing Legend Promotes Whiskey Despite Anti-Alcohol Stance

Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated boxing icon, is making headlines again, but this time, it’s not for his prowess in the ring. As he prepares for a highly anticipated rematch against John Gotti III on August 24 in Mexico, a recent development has sparked outrage among fans and critics alike. A new video circulating on YouTube shows Mayweather promoting his whiskey brand, ‘Good Money Whiskey,’ at a local supermarket, prompting a wave of criticism over what many perceive as hypocrisy.

The footage, uploaded earlier today by Fight Hype, captures Mayweather engaged in a promotional event for his spirits brand, which includes ‘Good Money Whiskey’ and his Champagne label, ‘Le Bon Argent.’ The retired five-division champion was seen signing bottles and interacting with a crowd of around 400 enthusiastic fans. However, this display of enthusiasm has not been well-received by all, given Mayweather’s public persona as a disciplined athlete with a stringent aversion to alcohol and smoking.

Mayweather launched his spirits venture on October 18, 2023, at Southern Glazer’s Las Vegas facility. The launch event showcased his whiskey and champagne, which have since gained traction across 11 states. The whiskey line features a five-year-old blend with notes of caramelized apple and tropical fruits, and a 10-year-old rye with butterscotch and vanilla undertones. Despite its quality, the brand’s association with Mayweather’s otherwise clean-living image has led to a backlash from fans who see a disconnect between his promoted lifestyle and his business endeavors.

“It’s crazy to see Floyd doing liquor promotion because he was one of the most disciplined fighters known to not drink etc,” the user wrote.

The user wrote, “Floyd doesn’t drink alcohol, but endorses it for “Money.” Why not create a healthy sports drink for athletes to compete with PRIME? Call it “50-0” 50 vitamins and Zero sugar. You’re welcome, this took 50 seconds to come up with.”

“Floyd out here selling Alcohol with value deal Steve Harvey,” the user remarked.

The user wrote, “I’m sorry haters but Floyd is the GOAT.”

Social media reactions have been swift and unforgiving. A common theme among the comments is a sense of betrayal from a figure who has long been celebrated for his discipline. “It’s astonishing to see Floyd, who always prided himself on not drinking or smoking, now endorsing alcohol,” one user remarked, reflecting widespread discontent among fans. This sentiment was echoed by others who viewed the promotion as a contradiction to Mayweather’s previously upheld values.

In a twist of irony, some fans have suggested alternative business ventures for the boxing star. One user proposed that Mayweather should create a healthy sports drink, humorously named “50-0,” to cater to athletes and compete with brands like PRIME. This suggestion highlights a perceived mismatch between Mayweather’s personal values and his current business focus.

Adding to the controversy is a humorous observation about one of Mayweather’s employees, who resembles TV personality Steve Harvey. This comparison, made by a user on social media, added a layer of amusement to the situation, calling the employee “Value Deal Steve Harvey.”

Despite the criticism, there remains a segment of supporters who view Mayweather’s business expansion as a natural progression. “Good to see Floyd branching out,” one fan wrote, while another defended him against detractors, declaring, “Floyd is the GOAT, and nothing will change that.”

As Floyd Mayweather continues to build his empire, the debate over his whiskey promotion reflects broader questions about authenticity and public persona in the sports world. While the backlash is significant, Mayweather’s ability to stir strong reactions, both positive and negative, is a testament to his enduring influence and polarizing presence.
