Claressa Shields Calls Out Noah Lyles for Jealousy as Sprinter Takes Aim at Anthony Edwards’ Adidas Deal

Noah Lyles, fresh off his electrifying 100-meter gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has found himself at the center of a swirling controversy—this time off the track. The sprinter’s sharp words, aimed at NBA rising star Anthony Edwards, have ignited a fiery debate, and the latest to weigh in is none other than WBC heavyweight champion Claressa Shields, who has labeled Lyles’ comments as rooted in “jealousy.”

The Controversial Comments: Lyles Takes a Swipe at Edwards

It all started with a seemingly innocuous invitation. Adidas, the global sports apparel giant, invited Noah Lyles to attend a shoe release event for Minnesota Timberwolves standout Anthony Edwards. But the gesture, meant to be a celebration of athletic excellence, quickly turned sour for Lyles. The 27-year-old sprinter, known for his blunt demeanor, was visibly displeased with the invite, especially considering Edwards had yet to even make it to an NBA Finals.

“You want to do what?” Lyles reportedly said in response to the invitation. “You want to invite me to [an event for] a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport that you don’t even care about? And you’re giving him a shoe?”

Though Lyles acknowledged Edwards’ impressive achievements and respected Adidas’ choice to endorse him as a rising NBA star, the sprinter couldn’t hide his frustration. “How could you not see that for me?” he questioned, leaving no doubt that he felt overlooked by the sportswear brand.

This miffed the 27-year-old sprinter, who said, “You want to do what?’ You want to invite me to [an event for] a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport that you don’t even care about? And you’re giving him a shoe?”

Noah Lyles expressed respect for Edwards, acknowledging his impressive performance and standout year in the NBA. Lyles also appreciated the foresight Adidas showed in endorsing him as a rising star in the NBA by giving him a shoe deal. However, Lyles questioned, “How could you not see that for me?”

Claressa Shields Enters the Fray: “This Looks Like Jealousy”

As the exchange made its rounds on social media, it didn’t take long for Claressa Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and current WBC heavyweight champion, to take notice. Shields, who has never shied away from speaking her mind, responded to the situation with a simple but pointed statement on X (formerly Twitter): “This looks [like] jealousy to me.”

Her comment resonated with many who were following the saga, igniting further debate on whether Lyles’ remarks were driven by envy rather than legitimate criticism. Shields’ remark wasn’t the only one to gain traction. New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson also chimed in, sarcastically tweeting, “Damn I thought this was Centel,” suggesting that Lyles might be overreacting.

“This looks [like] jealousy to me,” she responded to the post. And it’s not just her. New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson also reacted to the same statements, writing, “Damn I thought this was Centel.”

“This interview [is] forever funny.” Originally, when the interview had gone viral, Kevin Durant reacted to the comments from Lyles, stating, “Somebody help this brother.” However, after Team USA basketball defeated France in the gold-medal game recently, even the official USA Basketball X account took shots at Lyles, writing, “Are we the World Champs now?”

A History of Controversy: Lyles and the NBA

This isn’t the first time Noah Lyles has found himself in hot water over his comments about the NBA. Just a year ago, Lyles stirred the pot with his now-infamous criticism of the NBA’s use of the term “world champion.” In an interview following his 100-meter win at the World Championships in Budapest, Lyles, a five-time world champion, expressed his discontent with NBA players being labeled as “world champions,” arguing that true global competition only happens at the World Championships, where athletes from across the globe compete.

The interview went viral, sparking widespread debate and drawing the ire of several NBA stars, including Kevin Durant, who quipped, “Somebody help this brother.” Even after Team USA’s victory over France in the gold-medal game, the official USA Basketball account couldn’t resist taking a jab at Lyles, tweeting, “Are we the World Champs now?”

Claressa Shields, never one to miss a beat, weighed in on the resurfaced interview, adding a playful jab of her own. “This interview [is] forever funny,” she tweeted earlier this month, once again inserting herself into the ongoing dialogue surrounding Lyles and his contentious views on the NBA.

Jealousy or Justified? The Debate Continues

Noah Lyles’ outspoken nature has made him a polarizing figure, and his latest comments have only fueled the fire. While some argue that Lyles has a point in questioning why a sprinter of his caliber isn’t receiving the same recognition as a basketball player who has yet to reach the pinnacle of his sport, others see his remarks as a clear sign of envy.

Shields’ assertion that Lyles’ comments are rooted in jealousy adds another layer to the conversation. As someone who has navigated the challenges of being a dominant force in a sport that often struggles for mainstream recognition, Shields’ perspective carries weight. She understands the frustrations that come with being overlooked, but she also knows how to channel that energy into motivation rather than resentment.

The situation also raises broader questions about how athletes from different sports are valued and recognized, especially in an era where social media and branding play a significant role in an athlete’s marketability. Lyles’ frustration may not be entirely misplaced, but the way he has chosen to express it has certainly sparked a heated debate.

The Road Ahead: Will Lyles’ Comments Backfire?

As the dust settles on this latest controversy, the question remains: will Noah Lyles’ outspoken nature continue to create friction with other athletes, or will it propel him into a new level of fame and recognition? For Claressa Shields, the answer seems clear—Lyles’ comments are a classic case of jealousy, but whether that jealousy will motivate him to even greater heights or undermine his achievements is yet to be seen.

What is certain is that Lyles has once again succeeded in capturing the public’s attention, for better or worse. As the 2024 Paris Olympics continue to dominate headlines, it’s clear that Noah Lyles is not just a champion on the track—he’s also a master at keeping himself in the spotlight, even if it means ruffling a few feathers along the way.
