Oscar De La Hoya Slams Canelo Alvarez: A Boxing Feud Reaches Boiling Point

The boxing world is abuzz with controversy as a heated feud erupts between Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez, adding a dramatic twist to the sport’s landscape. With a blend of sharp words and intense emotions, De La Hoya has taken to social media to launch a blistering attack on Alvarez, igniting a firestorm of debate among fans and insiders alike.

A Clash of Titans: De La Hoya vs. Alvarez

The tension between De La Hoya, a former promoter and boxing legend, and Alvarez, the reigning Mexican boxing star, has reached new heights. The recent spark in this ongoing rivalry was ignited by Alvarez’s refusal to engage with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh over a potential high-profile fight against Terence Crawford. Alvarez’s dismissive remarks about Alalshikh, coupled with his alleged reluctance to negotiate, have enraged De La Hoya, leading to a scathing critique of the boxer.

In a fiery video posted on X, De La Hoya did not hold back. “So it turns out I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of s**t,” De La Hoya declared. He accused Alvarez of pricing himself out of significant fights and failing to entertain offers from Alalshikh, the influential Saudi matchmaker known for orchestrating monumental boxing events.

De La Hoya’s comments were aimed not only at Alvarez’s behavior but also at his upcoming fight against Edgar Berlanga. The bout, scheduled for September 14, is set to clash with the highly anticipated UFC 306 event, which is backed by Alalshikh. “Canelo is going up against UFC’s debut at the Sphere in Las Vegas, a spectacle everyone is excited about. And who’s funding it? Turki Alalshikh. Canelo, you’re really making the wrong enemies,” De La Hoya added with a hint of schadenfreude.

“He needs to do it my way, and not his way,” said Canelo bashfully during his recent press meet. “I respect everybody but I don’t like the way [Alalshikh] talks… I didn’t ask for this fight.”

Thus, HE pulled the Crawford fight off the table, and called out Canelo for making “easy show-only fights”. “I knew he was wasting our time and making excuses with big amounts of money that can’t be paid,” Alalshikh wrote on X.

“So it turns out I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t. Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him. Why? Because he’s outpriced himself so much that the Saudis don’t even want to deal with him.” Then he went further.

The Fallout: Canelo vs. De La Hoya

The animosity between De La Hoya and Alvarez has deep roots, stretching back to their time together at Golden Boy Promotions. Their relationship soured after Alvarez’s departure from the promotional company in 2020, a move that has led to ongoing legal battles and personal vendettas. De La Hoya has consistently accused Alvarez of neglecting his legacy and the support he once received from Golden Boy.

In a dramatic moment at the final press conference for Alvarez’s bout against Jaime Munguia, De La Hoya confronted Alvarez directly, unleashing a tirade of criticism. “Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez,” De La Hoya asserted, his voice filled with a mix of pride and anger. “The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it’s mine. So put some respect on it.” The confrontation escalated, with Alvarez responding in kind, leading to a heated exchange that saw both figures hurling insults and being separated by security.

“Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez, period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name and it’s mine. So put some f*** respect on it,” De La Hoya said, staring directly at Canelo.

Editor’s Insight: The Bigger Picture

This latest feud adds yet another layer to the complex and often contentious world of professional boxing. De La Hoya’s fiery remarks reflect not just personal frustration but also a broader dissatisfaction with how Alvarez has handled his career and relationships within the sport. For Alvarez, the controversy surrounding his fight schedule and his interactions with influential figures like Alalshikh may impact his standing in the boxing community and affect his future matchups.

As Alvarez prepares for his upcoming fight, the cloud of controversy looms large. His reputation and career trajectory may be influenced by how he navigates these turbulent waters, with De La Hoya’s critiques serving as a stark reminder of the challenges and rivalries inherent in professional boxing.
