“Don’t Go to Canelo Promotions”: Canelo Alvarez’s Support for Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz Sparks Controversy

The boxing world is buzzing after Canelo Alvarez’s recent endorsement of Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, which has ignited both praise and controversy. As Cruz prepares to defend his WBA super lightweight title against Jose Valenzuela at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium on August 3rd, Alvarez’s support has become a focal point of heated debate.

Canelo’s Unexpected Endorsement

In a recent Instagram clip, Canelo Alvarez shared a heartfelt message of encouragement to Cruz, translated as: “[Pitbull, you know that you are our rooster. We are going to be supporting you on Saturday, put a lot of effort into it, all the success in the world].” The gesture, while supportive, has stirred a complex mix of reactions from fans and analysts alike.

Cruz’s rise in the boxing world has been meteoric. His recent victory over Rolly Romero, a bout that had many comparing him to Canelo, has fueled speculation that he could be the next face of Mexican boxing. The praise from Alvarez, however, has not been universally well-received.

A Divided Fanbase

The response to Alvarez’s support has been polarizing. Some fans view the endorsement as a genuine show of solidarity, while others are skeptical. Comments on Cruz’s posts reflect a spectrum of opinions. One fan, expressing concern about potential conflicts of interest, wrote, “Hopefully the ‘Pitbull’ shows that he doesn’t run away from anyone and faces the best,” a veiled critique of Canelo’s reluctance to face high-profile opponents like David Benavidez.

Another comment, “Pitbull don’t go to #CaneloPromotions please,” suggests a fear that Cruz might align with Alvarez’s promotional circle. Despite these concerns, it’s noteworthy that Canelo does not own a promotion, and Cruz’s promoter, Sean Gibbons, maintains a good working relationship with the fighter.

Canelo’s Changing Popularity

Alvarez’s support for Cruz comes amidst his own controversies. The former undisputed champion has faced criticism for his refusal to fight Benavidez unless offered a $200 million purse, and his upcoming bout with Edgar Berlanga on September 14, Mexican Independence Day, has done little to quell the backlash. Critics have pounced on Alvarez’s actions, questioning his commitment to face top challengers.

A comment on social media starkly captured this sentiment: “And this clown[,] who is he? Which [hole] did it come out of?” This remark, although harsh, highlights the growing sentiment that Alvarez’s star may be waning. Despite his impressive career and contributions to boxing, such comments reflect a shift in public perception.

Earlier today, the WBA champion shared the clip in question, with the caption reading, “The pressure transformed it into motivation because tomorrow I will represent my Mexican race with dignity”.

The Pitbull’s Rising Star

Isaac Cruz’s reputation continues to grow, with many seeing him as a worthy successor to Canelo’s throne. His knockout ratio, standing at 69.23%, adds to the anticipation surrounding his upcoming fight. The enthusiasm for Cruz, coupled with his evident potential, suggests he is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the 168-pound division.

Fans remain hopeful that Cruz will deliver an electrifying performance, with one comment even expressing a desire for a knockout: “Greetings from Chicago, give us a knockout pls.” Cruz’s performance will be closely watched, not just for its implications for his career, but also for its potential to shift the dynamics in the Mexican boxing scene.

Canelo’s message roughly translates to “[Pitbull, you know that you are our rooster. We are going to be supporting you on Saturday, put a lot of effort into it, all the success in the world]”. Interestingly, after Cruz defeated Romero, Julio Chavez Jr. said, “I think he’s the best fighter in Mexico”. Similarly, Oscar De La Hoya also chimed in!

He ain’t supporting ‘Rayo’ [Jose Valenzuela] cuz he with Benavidez squad”, the user wrote.

Editor’s Note: The intersection of Canelo Alvarez’s support for Isaac Cruz with the ongoing controversies surrounding his career provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolving landscape of boxing. Alvarez’s backing of Cruz, while well-intentioned, has underscored the pressures and complexities facing top fighters today. As the boxing world continues to watch closely, the real test for Cruz will be not just in his performance in the ring, but in navigating the shifting allegiances and expectations that come with it.
