Terence Crawford Calls Teofimo Lopez “Trash” While Praising Other Boxing Stars

Terence Crawford’s feud with Teofimo Lopez shows no signs of cooling down. In a recent interview, the WBO super lightweight champion didn’t hold back, branding Lopez as “trash” while showering praise on other boxing elites.

The tension between Crawford and Lopez traces back to early this year. Before Lopez’s bout against Jamaine Ortiz in February, Lopez expressed his eagerness to move up in weight for a showdown with Crawford. Even after his victory over Steve Claggett in June, Lopez reiterated his desire to face Crawford. But Crawford, gearing up for his own bout against Israil Madrimov on August 3rd in Los Angeles, had a scathing response when the subject of Lopez came up.

In a recent Sports Center interview, Crawford was quick to commend boxers like Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, and Isaac Cruz. His admiration for these fighters was evident, and he spoke of them with genuine respect. However, when the conversation shifted to Lopez, Crawford’s demeanor changed drastically.

Boxing Social, where Lopez said, “The fighters that Crawford fought were handicapped. Errol Spence just announced about his [cataract] in his eye”.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Crawford was visibly irked when asked about Lopez, bluntly dismissing him as “trash.” The hostility isn’t new. Crawford had previously shown disdain for Lopez, famously declaring, “F**k Teo” in an interview with Fight Hype TV. Despite being present at Lopez’s fight against Ortiz, Crawford’s opinion of Lopez has remained unflinchingly negative.

But Crawford’s criticisms aren’t confined to Lopez. In the same interview, he lavished praise on renowned figures like Canelo Alvarez, Devin Haney, Jaron Ennis, and his upcoming opponent, Israil Madrimov. Crawford’s admiration for these fighters underscores his current pursuit of a high-profile fight against Canelo Alvarez, a bout that may further diminish Lopez’s chances of facing him anytime soon.

This led Lopez to conclude that Crawford just fights injured boxers to guarantee his victories, adding, “I’m healthy. Fight the best fighter at a healthier weight”.

So, what exactly did Lopez say to provoke such vehement hostility from Crawford? Back in January, Lopez made headlines with critical comments about Crawford’s past opponents. During an interview with Boxing Social, Lopez questioned the legitimacy of Crawford’s victories, implying that his opponents were compromised by injuries. Lopez pointed to Errol Spence Jr.’s eye condition and Kell Brook’s eye socket fracture as evidence that Crawford was only winning against impaired foes. He even remarked, “I’m healthy. Fight the best fighter at a healthier weight.”

These remarks have clearly struck a nerve with Crawford. Despite his respect for other potential opponents, Crawford’s disdain for Lopez remains palpable. As Crawford continues his quest for legacy-defining fights, Lopez’s comments have only served to deepen the rift between them, turning what could have been a promising bout into a bitter rivalry.
