Claressa Shields’ Storied Career

Claressa ‘T-Rex’ Shields, a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and multi-division world champion, has established herself as one of the greatest female boxers of all time. Her amateur record of 63-1 with 11 stoppages is a testament to her dominance in the ring.

The Rise to Prominence

Shields’ journey to greatness began with her Olympic triumphs. She captured gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination. As a professional, Shields has an unblemished record of 15-0 with 3 stoppages, adding numerous world titles to her name.

The Only Defeat: Savannah Marshall

Amidst her impressive achievements, one loss stands out: her defeat to the UK’s Savannah ‘Silent Assassin’ Marshall at the AIBA Women’s World Championship preliminaries in China in May 2012. Marshall, who held a record of 32-7, handed Shields her only amateur loss.

Redemption in London

A decade later, in October 2022, Shields and Marshall met again. This time, Marshall was undefeated with a 12-0 record. In a highly anticipated rematch, Shields emerged victorious, winning by decision in London. This win was a significant moment for Shields, as it allowed her to avenge her only loss.

Homecoming Victory in Detroit

Shields’ most recent fight took place at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, where she claimed another world title. The event was a homecoming for Shields, who hails from Flint, Michigan. She entered the arena in an evening dress fit for a queen, and the atmosphere was electric.

Dominating Performance Against LePage-Joanisse

In a six-minute display of boxing prowess, Shields defeated champion Vanessa ‘Vany’ Le-Page-Joanisse to capture both the light heavyweight and heavyweight belts. Le-Page-Joanisse, who had only eight professional fights (7-1 with 2 stoppages), was making her first title defense.

The Question of Competition

Despite Le-Page-Joanisse’s limited experience, Shields’ victory was impressive. However, questions arose about the level of competition she faced. Le-Page-Joanisse’s previous opponent had a record of 0-3-3, raising doubts about how she qualified for a world title fight.

Potential Matchups with Legends

Shields’ dominance in the ring has led to speculation about how she would fare against past legends like Lucia Rijker (17-0), Anne Wolfe (24-1 with 16 stoppages), and Laila Ali (24-0 with 21 stoppages). These hypothetical matchups generate excitement among boxing fans and highlight Shields’ place in the sport’s history.

The Controversial Fight Against Christina Hammer

One fight that continues to haunt Shields is her bout against Christina Hammer in April 2019. Shields, then 8-0, faced Hammer, a WBC and WBO Middleweight champion with a 24-0 record. The fight, held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was marred by controversy.

The Controversial Decision

Throughout the fight, referee Sparkle Lee repeatedly interrupted Hammer’s offensive attacks, leading to Shields winning by a wide margin (98-92, 98-91 twice). The decision was met with criticism, and Hammer’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, expressed his displeasure. Despite the official outcome, some, including the writer, believe Hammer deserved better.

Reflecting on the Past

Since their fight, Hammer has had only four bouts, moving up to super middleweight and facing limited opposition. Now 34 years old with a 28-1 record, Hammer is a shadow of her former self. The controversial fight against Shields remains a topic of discussion and raises questions about its impact on both fighters’ careers.
