Is the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Sebastian Fundora Fight Canceled? Here’s the Truth

In the ever-shifting landscape of boxing, few matchups have been as eagerly anticipated as Errol Spence Jr. vs. Sebastian Fundora. This bout was touted as a chance for Spence to redeem himself after a crushing defeat by Terence Crawford. However, recent reports and dramatic statements have thrown the fight’s future into uncertainty. Here’s a deep dive into what’s happening behind the scenes.

The Anticipation and the Controversy

Back in May, boxing insiders, including ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, reported that a fight between Spence and Fundora was being scheduled for October. Spence, eager to bounce back from his loss to Crawford, had been seen ringside for Fundora’s dramatic victory over Tim Tszyu, where he immediately challenged Fundora for his WBC and WBO super welterweight belts. It seemed like a thrilling setup for an epic showdown.

Yet, the boxing community was thrown into a frenzy this week when insider Rick Glaser made a startling claim on social media. Glaser alleged that Spence was “completely shot” and suggested that the fight with Fundora might not happen at all. His comments were emphatic: “#ErrolSpence is now confirmed to be completely shot, and the fight with #SebastianFundora is not happening at all.”

Glaser took to X to declare, “#ErrolSpence is now confirmed to be completely shot, and the fight with #SebastianFundora is not happening at all.” He further fueled speculation by telling a user on X, “I knew Spence was finished when Crawford dismantled him.”

The Glaser Fallout

Glaser’s assertions were further inflamed by his interactions with fans and followers on X, where he suggested that Spence’s poor performance against Crawford was a sign of a deeper issue. “I knew Spence was finished when Crawford dismantled him,” Glaser tweeted, fueling speculation about Spence’s readiness and the fight’s status.

Despite Glaser’s dramatic claims, there was no official word from PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) confirming the fight’s cancellation. The uncertainty left fans and analysts questioning whether the much-anticipated bout was off or merely postponed.

“If he wins his fight—God willing—and I win mine, God willing, then there’s a real possibility,” Crawford added.

Sebastian Fundora’s Rebuttal

In a surprising twist, Sebastian Fundora himself addressed the rumors on his Instagram Live on July 25th. When questioned about the potential cancellation, Fundora provided a straightforward response: “Nah, they just changed the date.” His comments offered hope that the fight was still on, albeit rescheduled, and contradicted Glaser’s dire predictions.

The Spence Factor

Adding to the intrigue, Spence had recently faced another health setback. In a deleted Instagram post, Spence revealed he had undergone cataract surgery following a retinal tear from 2021. This issue had previously forced the cancellation of his fight against Manny Pacquiao. Despite these health challenges, Spence’s camp has not officially confirmed any change in plans regarding his fight with Fundora.

Crawford’s Perspective

Meanwhile, Terence Crawford, who is set to face Israil Madrimov on August 3rd, has kept the door open for a future rematch with Spence. Speaking to Forbes, Crawford acknowledged the potential for a rematch, should both he and Spence emerge victorious in their upcoming bouts. “If he wins his fight—God willing—and I win mine, God willing, then there’s a real possibility,” Crawford stated.

The Road Ahead

For now, the fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora appears to be in limbo. While Fundora’s comments suggest the bout is not off, the lack of official confirmation and Glaser’s outspoken claims have left many in doubt. As the situation unfolds, boxing fans will be on edge, hoping for clarity on one of the year’s most eagerly awaited matchups.

In the meantime, the boxing world watches with bated breath as both Spence and Crawford navigate their respective paths. If Spence can overcome Fundora and Crawford prevails against Madrimov, a blockbuster rematch could be on the horizon, promising to deliver even more drama and excitement to the sport.
