But what started as a means to defend herself quickly evolved into a profound passion. “I told my mom I wanted to join a boxing gym,” Lozano recalled. With standout performances including a silver medal at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games and a series of accolades such as gold at the 2022 USA Boxing Elite Championship, Lozano’s prowess was undeniable. What got me started into boxing was the fact that I was very overweight when I was growing up. I used to get picked on and bullied, so I wanted to defend myself. I told my mom I wanted to join a boxing gym. I got confidence after I lost a lot of weight,” she confessed.
Facing the Shadows of Cartel Violence
Lozano’s accomplishments in boxing stand in stark contrast to the darkness that has loomed over her hometown. Laredo, Texas, being a border city, has been plagued by the violence and chaos associated with drug cartels. “Especially growing up, like there was a lot of machismo because we’re right on the border,” Lozano revealed. The environment was not only challenging due to its socio-economic conditions but also dangerous, with cartel-related violence claiming the lives of many in her community.
Lozano’s personal tragedy further deepened the dark shades of her past. Her late grandmother, who had affectionately given her the nickname “La Traviesa” (The Troublemaker), fell victim to a shootout in Nuevo Laredo. Lozano’s visit to her grandmother’s house, only to discover her lifeless body, was a crushing blow. The tragedy of her grandmother’s death, suspected to be linked to gang violence, left Lozano reeling but also fueled her resolve.

“Especially growing up, like there was a lot of machismo because we’re right on the border. So, I grew up in Mexico and Laredo, and I lost friends to the streets, I’ve lost friends to cartel. It’s a hard life like it’s not easy. And I’m not going to lie to you, I was at a point in my life where I almost did fall into that path- like the very deep wrong past,” the boxer revealed in the interview.
