Free agent Shakur Stevenson has unveiled his ambitious list of desired opponents if he signs with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. During an interview at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the undefeated WBC lightweight champion (22-0, 10 KOs) expressed enthusiasm about potentially joining forces with Hearn. However, the question remains whether Hearn can deliver the marquee matchups Stevenson craves.

Shakur’s Dream Opponents

Shakur Stevenson’s “Big Four” hitlist includes:

  • William Zepeda
  • George Kambosos
  • Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis
  • Vasily Lomachenko

These names represent some of the most exciting and challenging fights in the lightweight division. However, the reality of making these fights happen is fraught with complications, given promotional and network affiliations.

The Hurdles Ahead

Despite Stevenson’s excitement about working with Hearn, there are significant obstacles to securing these fights. Hearn does not currently promote Zepeda, Tank, or Lomachenko, making negotiations complex and uncertain. The most feasible matchup on Stevenson’s list is Kambosos, but even this fight comes with its own set of challenges.

The Kambosos Conundrum

George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) burst onto the scene with his stunning victory over Teofimo Lopez in 2021. However, since then, his career has hit a rough patch, with three losses in his last four fights. He is currently negotiating a fight with IBF light welterweight champion Liam Paro, a bout that could further derail his trajectory. A win over Kambosos, especially if he loses to Paro, might not provide Stevenson with the career boost he seeks.

Realistic Alternatives

If Hearn cannot secure the dream fights, he might have to explore other options within Matchroom’s stable:

  • Andy Cruz
  • Liam Paro
  • Regis Prograis
  • Jack Catterall
  • Richardson Hitchins
  • Subriel Matias
  • Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis

While these fighters are talented, they may not carry the same prestige or draw as Stevenson’s top choices. This mismatch in expectations could lead to frustration for Stevenson and potential conflicts with Hearn.

Shakur’s Perspective

“I like Zepeda. If we can’t get Zepeda, I think [George] Kambosos has been talking a lot today on Twitter. I would love to set up a fight in Australia and make him 0-4 down there,” Stevenson told iFL TV. His willingness to travel and take on tough challenges is evident, but the logistics of arranging these fights remain daunting.

Hearn’s Challenge

Eddie Hearn is known for his promotional prowess, but delivering on Stevenson’s demands will test even his capabilities. The likelihood of securing bouts with Tank, Lomachenko, or Zepeda is slim without substantial financial backing or cross-promotional cooperation. Hearn must weigh the risks and rewards of signing Stevenson, especially if he cannot meet the fighter’s expectations.

The Potential Fallout

Should Hearn fail to deliver the desired matchups, Stevenson’s dissatisfaction could spill into the public domain. “Him [Kambosos], Tank, Lomachenko, whoever we can get in the ring for the biggest and the best fights,” Stevenson said, highlighting his high expectations. A frustrated Stevenson might take to social media to voice his displeasure, creating a public relations challenge for Matchroom.

Shakur’s Style and Limits

Stevenson’s technical prowess is undisputed, but his lack of knockout power and cautious fighting style have drawn criticism. Recent performances against Artem Harutyunyan and Edwin De Los Santos highlighted these limitations. At lightweight, his physical advantages are diminished, and he faces tougher competition.

Hearn’s Cautious Approach

Hearn’s best strategy might be to offer Stevenson a short-term contract with clear deliverables. “I believe we’re a match made in heaven. If the business works for everybody, I’m sure we’ll have something to say about it,” Hearn remarked. This cautious approach could mitigate risks and allow both parties to reassess their partnership after a few fights.

A Match Made in Heaven?

If managed correctly, a partnership between Stevenson and Hearn could be mutually beneficial. However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges, and both parties will need to navigate carefully to avoid disappointment.
