Brooklyn, NY – The legend of Mike Tyson, one of boxing’s most formidable figures, is often marked by his unparalleled prowess in the ring and his tumultuous life outside of it. Yet, the reality was far from the idealized image of fatherhood. Kirkpatrick, who was never married to Tyson’s mother, Lorna, was sporadically present in their lives.

Tyson recalled in his autobiography that Kirkpatrick would occasionally visit, driving up in a Cadillac, briefly interacting with the children, and then disappearing for extended periods. “Curlee would drive over to where we stayed, periodically. He and my mother never spoke to each other; he’d just beep the horn and we’d just go down and meet him,” Tyson recounted. These fleeting interactions did little to provide the stability or support Tyson needed.

Kirkpatrick’s reputation was marred by rumors of criminal activity, including pimping, which painted a grim picture of his character. Despite these associations, Tyson’s desire to align himself with a more formidable presence in his neighborhood sometimes led him to embrace the identity associated with Kirkpatrick. However, Kirkpatrick’s departure from their lives when Tyson was just two years old marked the end of any significant paternal influence.

“Curlee would drive over to where we stayed, periodically. He and my mother never spoke to each other, he’d just beep the horn and we’d just go down and meet him. The kids would pile into his Cadillac and we thought we were going on an excursion to Coney Island or Brighton Beach, but he’d just drive around for a few minutes, pull back up to our apartment building, give us some money, give my sister a kiss, and shake me and my brother’s hands and that was it. Maybe I’d see him in another year.”
