Terence Crawford and Claressa Shields Defend Shakur Stevenson Amidst Fan Backlash

The boxing community has been abuzz with criticism directed at Shakur Stevenson following his recent performances. Despite securing victories, Stevenson has faced intense backlash from fans who have labeled his fights as “boring.” However, two prominent figures in the sport, Terence Crawford and Claressa Shields, have come forward to defend the young boxer, emphasizing that winning is ultimately what matters.

The Backlash Begins

Stevenson first faced significant criticism after his fight against Edwin De Los Santos in November last year. Fans were quick to judge, branding his performance as dull due to his cautious approach. The situation escalated after his bout with Artem Harutyunyan last weekend, where similar tactics led to another wave of discontent among spectators. Despite his victories, the Newark native found himself under fire.

Crawford and Shields Show Support

In response to the mounting criticism, Terence Crawford took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his support for Stevenson. “F**k em little bro @ShakurStevenson let [them] know how you feel,” Crawford tweeted, highlighting their close bond and his unwavering support.

Fuck em little bro @ShakurStevenson let em know how you feel. They letting you know how they feel.

Claressa Shields, another staunch supporter of Stevenson, also defended him passionately. She frequently refers to Stevenson as her younger brother and has consistently backed him throughout his career. Shields responded to the criticism by tweeting, “Y’all k**l me on this internet. What [makes] it ok for y’all to have opinions, statements, insults, post how something made you feel. But then tell a celebrity that they shouldn’t respond! You can not do that.”

Y’all kill me on this internet. What make it ok for y’all to have opinions, statements, insults, post how something made you feel. But then tell a celebrity that they shouldn’t respond! You can not do that.

Stevenson Fights Back

Encouraged by the support from Crawford and Shields, Stevenson decided to address his critics directly. He took to X, stating, “Bro everybody opening they mouth wit a opinion let me tell n*as how I feel fk it.” His frustration was evident, and he made it clear that he would not remain silent in the face of unwarranted negativity.

The Booing Crowd

The dissatisfaction among fans was palpable during Stevenson’s fight against Harutyunyan. The crowd, which had gathered with hopes of witnessing an action-packed match, was vocal in their disappointment. The boos began during the fight and continued through the in-ring interview post-fight, where Stevenson attributed the lackluster performance to his opponent’s strategy.

Stevenson responded, writing, “Most hated man in the sport. I appreciate yall for it thank u.. Much respect to Artem he came in shape and did what he could last night. I respect it..” Disappointed with the reactions from the fans, Stevenson gave props to the people who supported him, and wrote, “Tell your fav fighters [to] jump in the ring since I’m not like that I’ll be ready”.

Stevenson’s Response

On social media, Stevenson expressed his feelings candidly. “Most hated man in the sport. I appreciate yall for it thank u.. Much respect to Artem he came in shape and did what he could last night. I respect it..” He acknowledged the criticism but also gave credit to Harutyunyan for his efforts. Stevenson’s frustration with the backlash was clear, but he remained defiant, urging his detractors to challenge him in the ring.

One of his tweets read, “Bro everybody opening [their] mouth [with an] opinion let me tell n***as how I feel f**k it”.

The Road Ahead

Now officially a free agent after declining a $15 million offer for five fights from Top Rank, Stevenson’s future is uncertain. While he may secure bigger fights, the lingering question remains—who will be willing to face him amidst the criticism? His performances have sparked debate about his style, but his supporters, like Crawford and Shields, remind the world that boxing is about winning.

Stevenson’s journey highlights the pressures faced by athletes in the digital age. Despite the backlash, his talent and determination remain undeniable. With steadfast allies like Crawford and Shields by his side, Stevenson continues to navigate the challenges of his career. As he moves forward, the boxing community watches closely, hoping for a return to the thrilling performances that once defined his rise.
