Kenny Ellis, assistant coach to Gervonta Davis, has expressed skepticism about Shakur Stevenson’s ability to overcome top lightweight contender William Zepeda. Ellis believes that Zepeda’s aggressive style and power could spell trouble for the undefeated Stevenson.

Concerns Over Shakur’s Defensive Approach

Ellis voiced his concerns in an interview with MillCity Boxing, highlighting that Shakur would need to “fight him off” and doubting his ability to do so against a relentless opponent like Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs). Zepeda’s skill in cutting off the ring and his willingness to absorb punches to deliver his own could pose significant challenges for Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs).

The Edwin De Los Santos Comparison

Last November, Edwin De Los Santos struggled against Shakur because he couldn’t effectively cut off the ring. Ellis believes Zepeda wouldn’t face the same issue, as he excels at trapping his opponents and landing powerful combinations. This ability to pressure could neutralize Shakur’s defensive tactics.

Shakur’s Tepid Response to Zepeda

After his recent win against Artem Harutyunyan, Stevenson didn’t display much enthusiasm for a potential fight with Zepeda. Instead, he expressed interest in facing Gervonta Davis and Vasily Lomachenko. However, these matchups are unlikely to materialize soon, leaving Stevenson with limited options.

The WBC Belt Dilemma

Shakur holds the WBC title but has yet to make a mandatory defense since winning it against De Los Santos. If ordered to face Zepeda by the World Boxing Council, Stevenson’s reign might be at risk. He would need to accept the fight or risk losing his title.

Lack of Firepower and Borrowed Time

Stevenson’s performances against Harutyunyan and De Los Santos have raised doubts about his ability to compete with the elite. Ellis suggests that Shakur’s lack of knockout power and his reliance on defensive tactics could lead to his downfall against top contenders like Zepeda.

Other Dangerous Contenders

Shakur’s vulnerabilities extend beyond Zepeda. Contenders like Abdullah Mason, Andy Cruz, and Floyd Schofield also pose significant threats. These fighters possess the aggression and skill to potentially dethrone Stevenson.

Promotional Caution Advised

Promoters at PBC and Matchroom should be wary of investing heavily in Stevenson. His perceived vulnerabilities make him a risky proposition, and a loss against a top contender could drastically diminish his marketability. Ellis implies that any deal involving Shakur should be approached with caution.

Risk of Exposure

Ellis warns that signing Shakur could result in a high-risk scenario where he gets exposed by stronger fighters. This could lead to a steep decline in his popularity and value as a fighter. Promoters might only consider a one-off fight deal to capitalize on his current standing before he faces a potentially career-damaging defeat.

The Future of Shakur Stevenson

Shakur must reassess his approach if he wants to remain competitive at the highest level. Balancing his defensive skills with more aggressive tactics could be crucial. Otherwise, his time at the top might be limited.
