Shakur Stevenson Brands Gervonta Davis a “Casual” in Retaliation to His Dig During Frank Martin Post-Fight Press Conference:

The boxing world is buzzing with anticipation and intrigue, as two of the sport’s biggest names, Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis, find themselves at the center of a heated exchange. The tension between the two lightweight champions has reached a boiling point, with Stevenson branding Davis a “casual” in response to a dismissive comment made during a recent post-fight press conference.

The War of Words

Shakur Stevenson, fresh off winning his third world championship title, is preparing to return to the ring next week. His comeback follows a tumultuous period marked by a brief retirement announcement that sent shockwaves through the boxing community. Meanwhile, Gervonta Davis recently secured another successful title defense, cementing his status as one of the faces of modern boxing.

During the post-fight conference following his match with Frank Martin, Davis was asked about the potential for a bout with Stevenson. His response was less than respectful. “You know how it would go; everybody in this room knows how it would go,” Davis remarked, implying an easy victory over Stevenson. Although he later acknowledged that a fight between them would be good for the sport, his initial comment struck a nerve.

In an exclusive interview with award-winning boxing journalist Kevin Iole, Stevenson did not hold back. When asked about Davis’s comments, he responded with a sharp retort. “He’s a casual, though, like Tank is a casual; we gotta be honest,” Stevenson said. He suggested that Davis’s dismissive attitude stemmed from a lack of deep understanding of the sport.

Stevenson elaborated on his point by referencing Davis’s predictions about past fights. For instance, Davis had confidently predicted that Rolando Romero would defeat Isaac Cruz, only to be proven wrong. “That’s a casual opinion; like you, you really think about it, it’s a casual opinion,” Stevenson asserted, highlighting that Davis’s predictions were often more aligned with casual fan speculation rather than informed analysis.

The Bigger Picture

Stevenson’s critique wasn’t just a personal attack; it was a broader commentary on how casual opinions can shape perceptions in boxing. “A person who is deep into boxing will know that Isaac Cruz wouldn’t let Rollie Romero off so easily,” Stevenson explained. He emphasized that true boxing aficionados can see beyond the surface and understand the nuances of the sport.

The Newark-born southpaw’s comments add fuel to the fire of what could be one of the most exciting matchups in recent times. Both fighters bring unique styles to the ring—Stevenson is known for his elite defensive skills and technical prowess, while Davis is celebrated for his power and aggression. The clash of these styles promises a thrilling contest that fans are eager to see.

Editor’s Value:

Kevin Iole’s interview with Stevenson provided a platform for the champion to voice his frustrations and set the record straight. Iole, known for his deep respect for Stevenson, asked pointed questions that allowed the fighter to address the criticisms head-on. The interview not only shed light on the brewing rivalry but also underscored the importance of informed opinions in the sport.
