“When [Terence Crawford] Fought Avanesyan Everyone Cried”: Fans Vent Frustration Over Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ Next Bout

Philadelphia’s own Jaron Ennis, known as ‘Boots,’ has quickly risen as a formidable force in the boxing world. His impressive performances led to a signing with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in April this year. Ennis was originally slated to defend his IBF welterweight title against mandatory challenger Cody Crowley on July 13th. However, Crowley withdrew due to a serious eye injury. Enter David Avanesyan, the former WBA interim welterweight champion, now stepping in as Ennis’ opponent.

David Avanesyan’s Last Shot at Glory

The match will take place in Ennis’ hometown of Philadelphia, specifically at the Wells Fargo Center. Avanesyan, at 35, sees this as possibly his last chance at a title before hanging up his gloves. He’s eager to make a statement and possibly retire on a high note. Despite his respectable record of 30-4-1, facing an undefeated powerhouse like Ennis will be a significant challenge.

Avanesyan expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and respect for his opponent, stating, “I’d like to thank Matchroom and my manager Neil Marsh for this great opportunity. I do not need asking twice to have a war with somebody, especially a fighter as highly rated as Jaron Ennis.” He added, “I really respect Ennis and think he could become one of the best. I promise we will find out just how good he could become on July 13th.”

Fan Reaction: Disappointment and Skepticism

Despite Avanesyan’s confidence, many boxing fans are underwhelmed by the change in opponents. The announcement of Avanesyan replacing Crowley has sparked frustration and debate among the boxing community.

A fan highlighted the perceived discrepancy in excitement, recalling Avanesyan’s previous fight against Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford in 2022. The fan tweeted, “When Bud fought Avanesyan everyone cried, now that it’s Boots it’s a good fight?” This sentiment reflects the broader skepticism about Avanesyan being a suitable challenger for the young Ennis.

Another fan predicted a swift end to the fight, believing that Ennis will knock Avanesyan out before the sixth round. “Ennis puts him to sleep in under 6 rounds. An ok fight but Avanesyan is not good enough to test an elite talent like Boots,” they commented.

Many see this fight as a litmus test for Ennis, comparing his performance against Avanesyan to Crawford’s. One user stated, “Folks be watching to see if he can do better than Bud done with him. Anything beyond the 6th a FAIL.” This adds significant pressure on Ennis to not only win but to do so convincingly and in fewer rounds than Crawford.

Another fan questioned Ennis’ choice of opponent given his aspirations to challenge Crawford. “The guy that says he would beat Bud fights a guy Bud KO’d with ease,” they remarked, casting doubt on Ennis’ readiness for top-tier competition.

Ennis’ Confidence and Determination

Despite the mixed reactions, some fans appreciate Ennis’ willingness to take on any challenger. “Boots has a pair off balls. Little @ConorNigel would not fight David remember,” one user pointed out, praising Ennis’ courage in contrast to Conor Benn’s avoidance of Avanesyan.

Ennis himself remains unfazed by the criticism. His record of 30-0 with 27 KOs speaks volumes about his ability to finish fights decisively. His hometown crowd will undoubtedly be behind him, adding to the electrifying atmosphere expected at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Road Ahead for Ennis and Avanesyan

As the fight approaches, the spotlight is on both fighters for different reasons. For Ennis, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate his readiness for the upper echelons of the welterweight division. For Avanesyan, it’s a final shot at redemption and possibly a glorious end to his career.
