Errol Spence Jr. in Crisis: Frank Martin Reveals Rift with Trainer Derrick James Amid Lawsuit Drama

Errol Spence Jr., the former world champion, finds himself in a tumultuous situation as he prepares for a potential bout against Sebastian Fundora later this year. With no trainer in sight, Spence’s separation from his long-time trainer Derrick James has left him in a precarious position. Frank Martin, Spence’s training partner and close friend, recently shared insights into the ongoing turmoil between Spence and James.

The Legal Battle Unfolds

On April 17, a lawsuit was filed by Derrick James against Errol Spence Jr. in Dallas County, Texas, seeking damages exceeding $5 million. James claims that this amount represents unpaid dues from his time working in Spence’s corner. Shockingly, on the same day, Spence counter-sued James, seeking declaratory relief. The mutual legal actions have not only strained their professional relationship but also left Spence without a trainer just as he prepares for a significant fight.

Frank Martin Sheds Light

During an interview with Fight Hub TV, Frank Martin addressed the situation, revealing the current state of Spence’s training. When asked who Spence was training with, Martin admitted, “I don’t really know fully what’s going on,” but suggested that Spence has been working with some mutual acquaintances. However, he was unsure if any of them would take on the role of head coach.

“I couldn’t tell you. I don’t know what’s going on with that, no man,” said Martin. He noted that the only training activity he and Spence have shared recently was some cardio sessions. This ambiguity surrounding Spence’s training regimen is concerning, especially following his devastating loss to Terence Crawford last year, which was the last fight he prepared for under James’ guidance.

A Long-Standing Partnership in Jeopardy

Spence and James have a deep history, having been together since Spence’s amateur days in Dallas, which led to his representation of the USA in the 2012 Olympics. This long-standing partnership now seems irreparably damaged, leaving Spence without a clear path forward in his training.

“I don’t really know fully what’s going on”,

The Core of the Dispute

According to a report by Mike Coppinger from ESPN, the root of the dispute lies in a handshake agreement between Spence and James. This agreement allegedly stipulated that James would receive 10% of Spence’s fight purse. However, disagreements arose over the specifics of what James was entitled to receive, including PPV shares and endorsements.

James claims he should be entitled to 10% of Spence’s total earnings from fights, which often far exceed the guaranteed purse shown in contracts to avoid higher sanctioning fees. For instance, James asserts that he should have received an additional $2,100,500 for Spence’s fight against Terence Crawford, beyond the original $350,000 he was paid. James also estimates he is owed $2,899,500 from Spence’s previous fights against Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas.

Spence’s Counterclaims

On the other hand, Spence argues that James is only entitled to 10% of the guaranteed purse, not his entire earnings. This conflicting interpretation of their agreement has led to the current legal standoff. With James seeking a substantial sum from Spence’s fight earnings, it appears unlikely that the two will reconcile anytime soon.

Editor’s Perspective

The rift between Errol Spence Jr. and Derrick James highlights the complexities and potential pitfalls in the business side of boxing. Handshake agreements, while based on trust, can lead to significant disputes when substantial sums of money are involved. This situation serves as a cautionary tale for fighters and trainers alike to ensure that all agreements are clearly documented and legally sound. As Spence navigates this challenging period, his ability to secure a competent trainer will be crucial for his future success in the ring.

This article delves into the complexities of Errol Spence Jr.’s current predicament with a blend of factual reporting and insightful commentary, ensuring a compelling read that stands out in today’s crowded news landscape. The suggested headlines are designed to capture readers’ attention and generate curiosity, making them perfect for a viral spread.
